Tasting Notes

Brothers David and Nicolas Rossignol run this 100% Organic and Biodynamically farmed Domaine located in the very heart of Gevrey Chambertin. Very early to the Sustainable farming movement, all the family's vineyards, located in some of the most impressive vineyards in Burgundy, were converted to Certified Organic in 2004.

The domaine’s Chapelle-Chambertin comes from two parcels – En la Chapelle (planted in the 1960s) and Les Gémeaux (planted in 1924). Both are warm sites, directly below Clos de Bèze, with a mere 50 centimetres of soil above the rock. These tend to be slightly earlier-ripening than the other grands crus. The soil consists of layers of rock, with holes into which the roots can penetrate. The warmer soils here tend to make for a more opulent wine. In 2022, there is certainly more red berry fruit compared to Latricières but, when tasted in October 2023, this was easier to access and more immediate – a disarmingly pretty, yet dense wine. Two thirds whole-bunch vinification, with 40% new oak.

Critic Scores

As with the other 2022 offerings from Rossignol-Trapet, the Chapelle-Chambertin is initially slightly reserved but opens up nicely on the palate, with an expressive plum and black cherry fruit with floral and salty mineral nuance. The texture is deliciously creamy, full-bodied but supple, and not imposing, yet it lingers impressively on the finish. The domaine owns a half-hectare, sheltered from the Combe Grisard to provide a slightly warmer microclimate, with plots split between Les Gémeaux and Grande Chapelle.

Mid crimson purple. The bouquet is slightly more savoury than the deep red fruit of Latricières. This is very complete right across the palate, a little blood orange on top of a vigorous red fruit, and once again excellent length. Whole bunches show more in the saline finish. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: December 2023.
