Tasting Notes

Brothers David and Nicolas Rossignol run this 100% Organic and Biodynamically farmed Domaine located in the very heart of Gevrey Chambertin. Very early to the Sustainable farming movement, all the family's vineyards, located in some of the most impressive vineyards in Burgundy, were converted to Certified Organic in 2004.

The domaine’s Chapelle-Chambertin comes from two parcels – En la Chapelle (planted in the 1960s) and Les Gémeaux (planted in 1924). Both are warm sites, directly below Clos de Bèze, with a mere 50 centimetres of soil above the rock. These tend to be slightly earlier-ripening than the other grands crus. The soil consists of layers of rock, with holes into which the roots can penetrate. The warmer soils here tend to make for a more opulent wine. In 2023, there is certainly more red berry fruit compared to Latricières but, when tasted in October 2024 , this was easier to access and more immediate – a disarmingly pretty, yet dense wine. Two thirds whole-bunch vinification, with 40% new oak.

Critic Scores

Moderate reduction overshadows the fruit but there is both good freshness and verve to the velvet-textured and generously proportioned flavors that are rich to the point of opulence before culminating in a youthfully austere dusty and impressively long finish that offers even better complexity. This is already showing well and is a wine that should reward mid to even longer-term cellaring.

The Chapelle-Chambertin from Rossignol-Trapet is the polar opposite of its Chambertin: forward, high-toned pomegranate and cherry fruit, accented with notes of rose petal and spice. Despite the perfumed, ethereal aroma, however, there is density and depth on the palate, balanced by fresh acidity that carries the wine to a persistent finish. This should drink earlier than the Latricières. Three-quarters of the grapes are from En la Chapelle with the balance from Les Gémeaux – Rossignol-Trapet is the only domaine to have vines in both of them.
