This is without doubt one of the top addresses for tensile, terroir-driven Riesling in Germany

"What you can expect from the Breuer winery has been clear for years: Theresa Breuer, Hermann Schmoranz and Markus Lundén have a refined sense of style (and skill) that stands for deceleration and the value of nuance" Falstaff

Tasting Notes

The area receives a considerable amount of sunlight due to its predominantly south and south-west facing slopes towards the Rhine. The Pfaffenwies vineyards are characterized by the humid warmth of the Rhine, shallow, stony Hunsrück slate and Taunus quartzite soils and the deep loess in the lower slopes. – Theresa Breuer

Critic Scores

This sleek and tightly wound beauty has the Amalfi-lemon, lime-zest and wild-herb aromas we associate with the top vineyard sites at the northern extremity of the Rheingau. Only medium- bodied, but intensely mineral, this is bristling with racy energy and wet-stone minerality through the long, very focused finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold’

From Lorch, the 2022 Pfaffenwies offers a clear, refined and intense bouquet with clear, bright fruit aromas intertwined with delicate flinty notes of weathered slate. Full-bodied and mouthfilling on the palate, this is a pure, elegant, well-balanced but also tensioned and savory-finishing Riesling from the Pfaffenwies. 11.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2023.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

The Pfaffenwies vineyard, classified as a Grand Cru site in Rheingau, provides ideal conditions for producing age-worthy dry Rieslings of considerable depth and complexity. The 2022 vintage was characterised by warm spring and early summer conditions followed by cooler weather in autumn, concentrating flavours whilst maintaining good acidity essential to dry Riesling. Breuer's biodynamic management of the vineyard preserves soil structure and natural balance through careful canopy work. The slate-rich terroir imparts distinctive minerality, whilst the site's aspect and drainage encourage optimal ripeness.

Vinification

Whole-cluster pressing preserved delicate aromas and bright fruit character whilst minimising phenolic extraction from skins and stems. Natural fermentation began with ambient yeasts, proceeding slowly in temperature-controlled conditions to emphasise mineral character over fruit-forward notes. Maturation in older oak casks (500–1000 litre) for several months allowed the wine to settle and develop complexity without oak imprint. The 2022 release achieves dry classification with the acidity, structure and complexity expected of a serious, age-worthy Rheingau Riesling with considerable complexity and elegance.
