Dr Edge is the small, cult Tasmanian label of winemaker Peter Dredge, launched in 2015 to explore the island's cool-climate Pinot Noir. The 'North' bottling is sourced from the Stoney Rise Vineyard in the Tamar Valley, on alluvial clay and gravel washed down from the central highlands over the region's iron-rich volcanic dolerite. The warmer Tamar site gives riper, bolder, more voluptuous fruit than Dredge's southern parcels. Farming is low-intervention and the fruit hand-picked. The 2022 vintage in northern Tasmania produced a deep, structured wine, described by critics as moodier and more reductive than its southern sibling, with dark cherry, graphite and mineral energy.

This is an extremely limited release built for purity: 100% whole berry with around 25% whole bunches included, fermented with indigenous yeast. A cool ferment and gentle handling preserve the wine's filigreed, airy structure, with the reductive, struck-flint character deliberately encouraged. Maturation is in seasoned French oak with no new oak, so the fruit and the granite-fine, mineral tannins carry the wine rather than any oak signature. The result is a darker, spicier, more overtly structured young Pinot with powdered-granite tannin and oodles of mineral energy, built to reward several years in bottle.
