Tasting Notes

From very old un-grafted vines in the Onnerts and Herzlay sectors (situated just above and next to the Prälat) and fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for 12 months. Erdener Treppchen is perennially the more reserved of the trio of GG’s we present each year, demanding patience and attention. Whilst Sonnenuhr is habitually super charming, and Würzgarten is expressive and upright, Treppchen tends to be more earnest, taking time to reveal its stripes. This 2023 follows that narrative but when splashed into a big glass and given some air, its elusive nature is also it’s calling card. A wine for the ages and sure to go down in the annals of time as a classic.

Critic Scores

An amazingly minerally dry Mosel riesling that seems to descend into your glass from the heavens like an angel. Incredible wildflower and peach intensity, and yet this is very elegant and subtle on the medium-bodied palate. What fantastic precision at the extremely long finish. Great aging potential. Drink from release.

From the ferrous red slate soils of this very steep vineyard next to the Prälat, the 2023 Erdener Treppchen GG Alte Reben opens clear, deep, fresh and intense yet also refined on the elegant nose that intermingles delicate slate and intense saline notes with concentrated and spicy Riesling aromas without becoming too fruity. Mouth-filling, saline and highly refined on the palate, this is an elegant but tight and very complex, intense, long und textural Treppchen with a sustainable and layered finish that exhibits mineral and herbal flavors as well as great and complex intensity that is sourced from the terroir and transported by the deep roots of the ancient vines. The 2023 Treppchen is a highlight of the vintage in Loosen's portfolio and most probably among all the Grosses Gewächs Rieslings from the Middle Mosel. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Dr. Loosen, established 1652, controls some of Mosel's finest vineyard parcels across multiple renowned sites demonstrating exceptional terroir quality. The Erdener Treppchen vineyard ('vineyard steps') rises in dramatic terraced slopes above the Moselle river, with blue-grey slate and Devonian schist soils that impart vibrant minerality and distinctive character. The steep terrain demands labour-intensive hand cultivation, a practice maintained across generations with respect for the vineyard's delicate environment. The estate employs sustainable viticulture respecting fragile slate ecosystems. The 2023 vintage benefited from Mosel's cool continental climate, yielding physiologically ripe Riesling.

Vinification

Harvesting prioritises optimal phenolic and sugar ripeness, with selective picking across multiple passes through the vineyard. After gentle crushing and pneumatic pressing to avoid excessive extraction, musts ferment in stainless steel using natural yeasts, typically lasting three to four months or longer. The wine remains in contact with fine lees through winter months, developing subtle autolytic texture and complexity through gradual maturation. Minimal sulphite addition preserves natural flavours whilst ensuring stability and longevity. Spring clarification and bottling without fining or filtration retain the wine's delicate mineral expression and natural aromatics.
