Tasting Notes

From very old ungrafted vines in the Onnerts and Herzlay sectors (situated just above and next to the Prälat) and fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for 12 months.

Erdener Treppchen is perennially the more reserved of the trio of GG’s we present each year, demanding patience and attention. Whilst Sonnenuhr is habitually super charming, and Würzgarten is expressive and upright, Treppchen tends to be more earnest, taking time to reveal its stripes.

Critic Scores

The 2024 Dr. Loosen Riesling Mosel Erdener Treppchen GG Alte Reben has a striking nose of sliced fennel and fennel seeds. Compact and crisp, this remarkable GG has tons of structure and very good concentration. It needs some time to emerge from its youth. Best after 2026.

The 2024 Riesling Erdener Treppchen Alte Reben Grosses Gewächs mixes red apple peel and savor with ripe citrus. The palate tingles with the zestiness of tangerine and salty flavor. A certain lightness is beautifully bedded on smooth, dense creaminess and svelteness. The 2024 is an understated but elegant Treppchen. (Dry)

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Dr. Loosen's Erdener Treppchen represents some of Mosel's most distinctive and treasured terroir, where blue-grey slate soils weather on vertiginous slopes overlooking the Moselle river's thermal regulation. The vineyard's historic tiered cultivation ('Treppchen' meaning steps) reflects centuries of adaptation to extreme terrain and challenging conditions. Vines benefit from maximum sun exposure during the growing season and the river's important thermal moderation throughout the year. The estate practices sustainable viticulture with minimal intervention, respecting the fragile slate ecosystem. The 2024 vintage presented moderate growing conditions typical of Mosel, delivering precise acidity.

Vinification

Selective hand-harvesting ensures optimal readiness and phenolic maturity whilst preserving acidic structure absolutely essential to Mosel Riesling's definition. After crushing and gentle pressing to prevent harsh extraction, fermentation occurs in stainless steel using resident yeasts naturally present on the fruit, a process typically extending three to four months or beyond. The wine develops character on fine lees through winter months, gaining textural nuance and subtle complexity from autolytic interaction. Spring clarification remains minimal, with bottling conducted without fining or filtration to preserve the wine's natural mineral intensity.
