The wine comes from one of the most highly regarded vineyards in Germany, the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, which is known for producing some of the world's finest Rieslings.

Aromas of ripe peach, apricot, citrus, with subtle minerality along with a bright and lively pallet of juicy peach and lemon zest leading to a long, clean finish.

This wine is an excellent choice for anyone who appreciates the beauty and complexity of a well-made Riesling.

Tasting Notes

Each year, this wine remains one of the most graceful and refined of Erni’s GG offerings upon release. From ungrafted vines in the Laychen (central part) and Sandpichter (near Zeltingen) lieux-dits, fermented with ambient yeasts, and aged in oak for 12 months.

At this early stage, the wine is slightly more compact than previous vintages, making it even more approachable right now. However, the inner depth and delicate, lace- like fruit suggest that although delicious just now, a long future lies in wait. It’s shaping up to be one of the standout wines of the year, even at this early juncture!

Critic Scores

The 2024 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Alte Reben Grosses Gewächs, from ancient, ungrafted vines, has subtle savor. It shimmers with lemon and stone on the nose. The palate is citric, slaty and the picture of brightness. The 2024 is understated but profoundly lemony, zesty and so linear. It is svelte but incisive.

The 2024 Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG Alte Reben opens with very ripe fruit and delicate slate and herbal notes. It is delicately sapid and salty on the round, elegant palate, which is characterized by ripe, almost sweet and juicy fruit but does not yet reveal great finesse, instead offering power and tannins as well as citrus acidity in the finish. The wine has substance but needs time. Tasted as a sample at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden, August 2025.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Wehlener Sonnenuhr ('sundial'), positioned as one of Mosel's most storied and celebrated vineyard sites, offers its south-facing slope and distinctive slate soils producing Rieslings of exceptional mineral precision and aromatic depth. The vineyard's historic 'sundial' orientation maximises afternoon sun exposure, warming the slate bedrock and accelerating grape ripeness whilst maintaining the region's critical signature acidity. Dr. Loosen holds prime parcels here, worked by hand across generations of careful stewardship. The estate employs sustainable practices respecting the fragile slate environment and vintage expressions. The 2024 vintage saw moderate Mosel conditions, allowing the terroir's inherent flinty character.

Vinification

Grapes are hand-selected and harvested at physiological maturity, with careful sorting to maintain and ensure quality standards for each batch. Following gentle crushing and slow pneumatic pressing to preserve aromatic freshness, juice ferments in stainless steel using wild yeasts, a methodical process extending many months through multiple seasons. The young wine rests on fine lees through winter, developing subtle aromatic complexity and textural elegance from extended contact. Spring racking removes coarse sediment whilst preserving fine lees character that enhances mineral expression. Minimal sulphiting and unfiltered bottling retain the wine's delicate mineral character and natural aromatics.
