Dune is a McLaren Vale label established by brothers Duncan and Peter Lloyd, with Duncan making the wines after training and working across Tasmania, Margaret River, Chianti and the Rhone before returning home in 2016. The Shiraz comes from the Blewitt Springs sub-region, a pocket of McLaren Vale prized for its deep, ancient sandy soils over clay at higher elevation. Those free-draining sands and cooler nights give perfumed, fine-boned Shiraz rather than the region's heavier archetype, a style Dune deliberately pursues. Farming favours freshness and aromatic lift. The 2024 vintage in McLaren Vale was a cooler, later season that suited this fragrant approach, and the wine won the trophy for Best Shiraz at the McLaren Vale Wine Show.

In keeping with the fresh, aromatic Blewitt Springs style, the fruit is picked at moderate ripeness and fermented with a proportion of whole bunches to build perfume, spice and supple tannin. Fermentation is handled gently, with restrained plunging or pump-overs to preserve aromatics rather than extract heavily, before pressing and completion of malolactic fermentation. Maturation is in seasoned French oak, chosen to support rather than mask the wine's red- and dark-fruit lift and savoury detail, giving a medium- to full-bodied palate with fine-grained tannins. Exact whole-bunch percentage and oak regime for the 2024 release should be confirmed with the producer.
