Tasting Notes

Faustino I Gran Reserva 75 Aniversario is a red wine from the Rioja D.O. region. This wine is produced by the Bodega Faustino as a homage to the president of the winery, Julio Faustino Martínez. The winery is based in Ovón (Álava) and has over 150 years of experience behind in the development of premium wines.

This wine is is made with Tempranillo from the 650 hectares of vineyards that lies in the Rioja Alavesa, between Laguardia and Ovón. The climate of the zone is mediterranean with a strong cantabrian influence. This zone also does not experience the cold winds from the north, since the Sierra de Cantabria acts as a natural barrier of protection.

After the harvest, the grapes undergo fermentation in tanks for a period of 21days. After, the must is place in barrels to peform malolactic fermentation.

Finally, Faustino I Gran Reserva 75 Aniversario ages in an American Oak barrel for 11 months and in a French oak barrel for 14, being racked 4 times during the ageing process.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Bodegas Faustino has farmed vineyards across Rioja Alavesa since 1861, establishing 650 hectares of holdings that supply their signature wines. The 2017 growing season was characterised by a warm spring and controlled summer, yielding ripe Tempranillo with balanced acidity and dense tannin. Their fruit comes from the clay-limestone soils of Oyón and surrounding villages, where the continental climate moderates mountain influence. Vineyards are managed with focus on quality selection rather than yield maximisation, traditional to the region's methods.

Vinification

Tempranillo dominates the blend (circa 86 percent) with supporting Graciano and Mazuelo. The 2017 vintage was hand-harvested and underwent fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with extended maceration to extract colour and phenolics. Following primary fermentation, the wine transferred to a combination of American and French oak for two years of élevage, where it developed secondary flavours and rounded tannin structure. The wine remained in bottle under cellar conditions for an additional period before release.
