The wine has lovely length and weight across the palate. A touch of lemon pith, crushed oyster shell and a hint of toasty oak. Full bodied yet beautifully restrained

Made in small quantities from the Isolation Ridge Vineyard. Matured in 500L puncheons it combines the crisp acidity of the region and the generosity of the grape variety.

Tasting Notes

Ripe nectarines and lemon curd intertwined. Very complex palate that rewards with time in the glass to fully express Itself. Stony and textural upfront balanced by white peach and a saline acidity. The wine has lovely length and weight across the palate. A touch of lemon pith, crushed oyster shell and a hint of toasty oak. Full bodied yet beautifully restrained.

Critic Scores

Plenty of appeal with its stone fruit and pineapple flavours all dressed up with creamed honey and woodsy spices. Lot of zesty, citrusy acidity with lime oil and some savoury nuances of cedarwood and almost a popcorn character. Lots of flavour yet flinty and super-tight across the palate.

Vineyard Cultivation

Frankland Estate, founded in 1988 by Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam and now run by second-generation siblings Hunter and Elizabeth Smith, sits in the Frankland River subregion of Western Australia's Great Southern. This Chardonnay is made in small quantities from the estate's Isolation Ridge vineyard, whose ironstone-gravel soils over clay, elevation and markedly cool nights combine the region's crisp natural acidity with the generosity of the variety. The 2023 growing season produced fruit picked to hold that tension between ripeness and freshness, favouring a restrained, structured style over overt richness.

Vinification

The hand-tended fruit was whole-bunch pressed and fermented, with maturation in 500-litre French oak puncheons rather than smaller barriques, so oak influence stays subtle and textural. The larger-format vessels and lees contact lend weight, breadth and a light toasty, savoury nuance while preserving the wine's flinty tension and length. Barrel-ferment and lees work build the creamed-honey and woodsy-spice complexity noted by critics, over a core of stone fruit, pineapple and lime-oil acidity. The result is full-bodied yet beautifully restrained, tight and flinty across the palate. Precise new-oak percentage and lees duration for the 2023 release are not published.
