Tasting Notes

The wine is very intense, full-bodied but elegantly styled, with tremendous length and balance.

- Huon Hooke

Fruit for this wine was sourced from the original east west facing “Winery Block” planted on Isolation Ridge in 1988.

A brooding complexity of floral aromas and ferrous minerality giving the wine intent and seriousness.

Tight acidity and tannin, which combine and give the wine a graphite/ferrous thread through the palate.

Critic Scores

Deep, bright purple/red colour, the bouquet shows violets, cranberry and blueberry, with meaty spicy overtones, and a note of bunchy 'forest floor' adding extra interest. The wine is very intense, full-bodied but elegantly styled, with tremendous length and balance. Wow, this is impressive cool-climate shiraz: spicy but ripe and powerful in its relatively understated way.

More specific sourcing within the Isolation Ridge vineyard, a section no doubt that brings that little extra va-voom to the way shiraz works here. Enticing floral fragrance as well as a stony, gravelly sense, deliciously attractive and toned on the palate. There's a purity to this wine that enhances all that's on offer. - Tony Love

The 2019 Smith Cullam Syrah is fine and restrained, very much in line with the Isolation Ridge Syrah. It has a Nebbiolo-like floral character to it, which I love. There are notes of wet rose petals, camphor (?), graphite, asphalt and petrichor. This is a beguiling wine.

Soft, gentle, detailed red of spice, savouriness and very pure feeling and unadorned fruit character. Has some pretty sweetness balanced nicely by fresh acidity, a good deal of fruit concentration, and a general sense of elegance comes to mind. Bright finish, a little crunchy, says hold off drinking for a year or so. Excellent wine.

Vineyard Cultivation

Frankland Estate was established in 1988 by Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam in the Frankland River sub-region of Western Australia's Great Southern, and is now run by their children, siblings Hunter and Elizabeth Smith. The Smith Cullam bottling, named for the founders, is a selection from the Isolation Ridge vineyard, worked organically on undulating slopes of ancient duplex soils — gravel and loam over a clay sub-soil. Fruit for this wine came from the original east-west-facing 'Winery Block' planted on Isolation Ridge in 1988. The cool 2019 growing season in the Great Southern favoured slow, even ripening, retaining natural acidity and the perfumed, spicy character that marks the site's syrah.

Vinification

Hand-selected syrah was destemmed, with a portion of whole bunches typically retained, then fermented in small open vessels with regular plunging to build the wine's fine, graphite-like tannin. After pressing the wine completed malolactic fermentation and was matured in French oak, with only a restrained proportion of new barrels so that the fruit's floral, ferrous character stayed to the fore. The Smith Cullam is a barrel selection of the estate's most complete syrah parcels from Isolation Ridge, bottled to reflect site before vintage. Precise oak regime and whole-bunch percentage for this release are not published.
