Tasting Notes

100% Touriga Nacional, organically grown, sourced from grafted vines on Isolation Ridge. The vineyard sits on an undulating northern and eastern-facing slope on ancient duplex soils of gravel and loam over a clay sub-soil. It is farmed using organic viticultural practices and this is reflected in the depth and concentration of fruit flavours. The vines are trained on a Vertical Shoot Position (VSP) trellis system to enhance sunlight penetration of the canopy and optimize ripening conditions. Touriga Nacional was grafted into the vineyard in 2017.

The vines were spur-pruned. The grapes were machine harvested and shallow-fermented in stainless steel open fermenters, before being aged for 10 months in 500 litre French oak puncheons. Unfiltered and unfined.

TASTING NOTE

Organically grown and made, 100% Touriga Nacional Touriga plays well with others and is a cracking variety for blending. Vibrant cherry red in colour. Fresh lifted raspberry and floral notes, early season plums, dried herbs give a wine of amazing perfume. It’s bold and lush on the palate. Lovely cherry and chocolate characters interact with fine gravelly tannins, salty liquorice flavours and a sweet core of fruit. This leads to a wine of balance with a bright crisp finish. Touriga Nacional as a variety offers good cellaring potential, will be good to see where this goes In a few years.

Vineyard Cultivation

Frankland Estate, founded in 1988 by Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam and now run by their children Hunter and Elizabeth Smith, farms the Isolation Ridge vineyard organically in Frankland River, Western Australia. This 100% Touriga Nacional comes from vines grafted into the vineyard in 2017. The site sits on undulating northern- and eastern-facing slopes of ancient duplex soils — gravel and loam over a clay sub-soil — trained on vertical shoot position trellising to open the canopy and even out ripening. Organic viticulture underpins the depth of fruit, and the 2024 season allowed the Portuguese variety to reach full flavour while keeping the fresh, savoury edge the estate seeks.

Vinification

The spur-pruned vines were machine-harvested. Fruit was fermented shallowly in stainless-steel open fermenters to keep extraction gentle and preserve the variety's floral, sweet-cherry aromatics, then aged for around ten months in 500-litre French oak puncheons. The larger-format oak lends structure without dominating the fruit, and the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered. The minimal-intervention handling retains the concentration that organic farming brings to this experimental single-vineyard release.
