Tasting Notes

Light straw gold with strong green tinges running through the wine: waxy meyer lemon, hazelnut, apricot and yellow peach and a salty sea breeze make for a complex bouquet. Very textural and creamy on the palate with powerful punch of yellow stone fruits augmented by subtle cashew like oak and cleansing citrus flavours pulling the palate on a long trajectory. Our best M.P chardonnay released to date. This wine is ready now but it will certainly age gracefully, and it sure packs a punch of flavour. 13.4% Alc/vol

Critic Scores

Light, bright yellow hue; the fragrance suggests small white flowers, citrus blossoms, creamy yeast lees, beeswax and the white peach while the palate has impressive intensity and persistence, the volume of flavour is classic chardonnay and oak has been used sensitively. A superb, beautifully balanced chardonnay.

A joyful young chardonnay whose pristine aromas of grapefruit and yellow peach are lifted by bright floral notes, lemon and ginger, with an underswell of creamy yeast-derived notes and a whiff of chicken stock. It’s long and smooth, with a round, juicy core of grapefruit and lemon finely balanced with tight-grained oak and underpinned by a fine mineral texture, before finishing long, dry and savoury with a mouthwatering lemony acidity. Shapely and pleasingly complex already, it’s more fruitful than previous editions of this wine. Drink any time over the next decade.

A beauty of an uncluttered chardonnay that brings a clear and precise sense of regional Peninsula terroir and purity. A lovely concentration of fruit lies at its heart, with citrus and white stone fruits, white nectarines, a gentle spice, almond meal and arresting spring florals tied tightly together by brisk acidity. This is a wine of subtle beauty, as always, with depth, but it's not beholden to obvious oak. Finishes on a lingering, bright lemon sherbety note.

Vineyard Cultivation

Gaffy & Neal pairs winemaker Doug Neal, of Geelong's Paradise IV, with Darrin Gaffy of Principia Wines on the Mornington Peninsula. This chardonnay is built on the P58 clone — as planted at Giaconda — from cool maritime vineyards at Balnarring and Merricks North in Victoria. Low yields and slow ripening on these sites give tight natural acidity and concentrated citrus and stone fruit. The 2025 season yielded a bright, expressive wine, reviewers noting fine floral lift, grapefruit and yellow peach over a mineral texture, and describing it as more fruitful than earlier editions.

Vinification

In the house style the hand-picked fruit was barrel-fermented in French oak with a portion new, using a partial malolactic fermentation and lees maturation to build a round, creamy texture balanced by bright, mineral acidity. Earlier releases used around thirty per cent new oak and finished near 13.4% alcohol; the exact figures for 2025 are not confirmed. The result is a complex, savoury chardonnay with grapefruit and yellow peach, creamy yeast-derived notes and tight-grained oak.
