Tasting Notes

Green and white gold like qualities; limes, white nectarines and grilled grapefruit, salty sea air with spicy Valencia orange zest oak adding a twist, roast chicken pan juices with a very subtle matchstick element hiding in the background. Tightly coiled, seamless, powerful white stone fruits wrapped in creamy, spicy surrounds with piercing intensity and length of fruit. This is as close as we have come to perfection thus far. Needless to say, we are incredibly excited by what chardonnay on the Mornington Peninsula can deliver. 13.4 alc/vol

Critic Scores

A spectacular chardonnay whose voluminous and alluring perfume reveals deep layers of stonefruit, grapefruit and lemon tightly knit with faintly toasty vanilla oak spot lit with complex nuances of spice, creamy nougat and roast chicken pie. Its unctuous core of pristine stonefruit and citrus flavour steamrolls long and clear down a finely textured backbone, driving with power and style towards a fine, focused finish of refreshing and faintly mineral acids. Artfully balanced with smoky oak, it’s quite a masterpiece. Acknowledging the role of Darrin Garry in its making, this Chardonnay gets my nod as the finest white wine yet released by Doug Neal.

Bright, light yellow with a subtle touch of smoky reduction on the first aroma, then comes an array of orchard fruits, from pear to ripe apple, creamy yeast lees notes, cashewnut and custard apple. A hint of snuffed candle. The palate is rich and fleshy withy concentration and generosity, but also elegance, the finish lasting a very long time.

A quiet charm offensive is taking place in the glass, combining pristine fruit and a distinctive Mornington Peninsula pedigree of finesse. White florals, pure citrus, fleshy stone fruits, melon, almond meal, peach skin, saline and a light spice arrive with a mineral-clean brightness and acidity that shines. It's early days, but the emerging textural qualities are noted, as is the underlying role of oak and, through it, a complexity of deep flavour building through the middle palate. Finishes on point, pithy and with a tangy farewell. Impressive now, but just wait.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

The Peninsula, formerly released as Merricks North Chardonnay, is the single-site cuvée of the Gaffy & Neal partnership between Doug Neal, of Geelong's Paradise IV, and Darrin Gaffy of Principia Wines. It comes from the Merricks North district of the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, a cool, elevated maritime area on brown loam soils that yields chardonnay of finesse and mineral drive. The 2025 season gave a concentrated, tightly structured wine, with reviewers pointing to layered stone fruit, grapefruit and lemon and a fine, mineral-clean acidity as hallmarks of the site.

Vinification

The hand-picked fruit was barrel-fermented in French oak, with lees maturation and, in the house style, a partial malolactic fermentation adding creamy texture and complex, smoky, savoury notes. Oak is used to frame rather than dominate a concentrated core of stone fruit and citrus, the wine finishing long, focused and faintly mineral. Precise new-oak proportion and analysis for this release are not published.
