Tasting Notes

This 100% Syrah is an almost-opaque, inky purple with aromas of smoky crushed black berries and cherries, black pepper, vanilla, and floral oils. Sweet blueberry and roasted black fruit compote swirl in the silky tannins and nuances of black tea, game, green pepper, and spices. The palate is smooth and generous with a hint of toasted wood from the 7 months spent in French oak barrels. The finish is smoky and long with building spices, fennel, and vanilla on a deliciously floral backdrop.

This Syrah is big and bold and best enjoyed with big and bold food. Serve chilled at 18°C and pair with grilled, stewed or roasted red meat or large game, rosemary crusted lamb, shepherd's pie, sausage, and potatoes.

In addition to the estate in Collines Rhodaniennes, Domaine Georges Vernay maintains vineyards in the I.G.P. of Saint-Joseph and Condrieu. Fleurs de Mai means “Flowers of May” and was chosen as the name of this wine as a nod to an orchard of Mayflower peaches that used to be grown where the Syrah vines are planted today.

The vines are over 50 years old and planted on a plateau that is adjacent to Condrieu. The grapes are hand-harvested when they are fully mature, then loaded and transported to the cellar for selection and fermentation.

Critic Scores

Violet and lilac notes glisten atop the cassis fruit. A sleek iron spine is inlaid deeply through the finish. Very pure, with a long echo of savory.

Moving to the reds, the 2017 IGP Collines Rhodaniennes Fleurs de Mai comes from very old Syrah vines planted by George Vernay on the upper plateau. Prior to being planted to vines, the vineyard was a peach orchard, and Fleurs de Mai references a variety of peach. This medium ruby-colored effort gives up plenty of exotic, peppery, almost tropical notes as well as blackberry and black raspberry fruits, medium body, fine tannins, and a sexy, incredibly gulpable style. Drink it over the coming 3-4 years.

Vineyard Cultivation

Domaine Georges Vernay, one of the northern Rhone's most celebrated estates and the house that revived Condrieu, also makes a small range of reds. Fleurs de Mai is a 100% Syrah bottled under the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes, from very old Syrah vines that Georges Vernay planted on the upper plateau above Condrieu. The site was a peach orchard before it was planted to vines, and the name Fleurs de Mai - 'May flowers' - refers to a variety of peach that once grew there. Granite-influenced soils and the estate's organic farming underpin the wine's fragrant, peppery style. The 2017 northern Rhone season was warm and early, giving ripe, generous fruit.

Vinification

The Syrah is hand-picked and fermented in the estate's traditional manner, with maceration kept gentle to favour perfume and drinkability over extraction. The wine is raised in older oak so that no obvious woody character intrudes, preserving its medium ruby colour, fine tannins and exotic, peppery, almost tropical aromatics alongside blackberry and black raspberry fruit. Elevage is relatively short, in keeping with a wine designed to be enjoyed within a few years of release rather than for long ageing. Malolactic fermentation completes naturally, and the result is a light-framed, savoury, gulpable northern Rhone Syrah.
