Tasting Notes

This Syrah (made with 5% Viognier) combines a powerful side with very floral notes. It is a dark wine offering a mineral nose with notes of smoke, black fruit, black olive, and pepper -- always enhanced by a floral component. It is aromatic on the palate, with firm but smooth tannins, and a beautiful lingering finish. Its aromatic mouth, with well-built but smoothed tannins, continues in a beautiful final length.

Critic Scores

Deep magenta. An expansive, sharply detailed bouquet displays highly perfumed blueberry, black raspberry, candied violet, smoky mineral and exotic spice. Juicy and lithe on the palate, offering intense red and blue fruit preserve, allspice and black cardamom flavors that stain the palate while showing no excess weight. There's something Pinot-like going on here. Finishes extremely long and appealingly sweet, with building florality, polished tannins and a resonating mineral note.

More fresh and herbal than most 2019 Côte-Rôties, showing black olive and bay leaf. Fresh, only medium-bodied, it almost feels as if this was made in a cooler vintage. Vibrant, keen, with quite angular acidity and chiselled tannins. No evident oak, more about the whole bunch. This might be too lean for some, but traditionalists will love its bristling tannins and savoury finish. Lieux-dits Semon, Lancement and Maison Rouge, fermented in stainless steel with a small proportion of whole bunch, aged in barrels and Stockinger foudres.

Vineyard Cultivation

Domaine Georges Vernay farms holdings not only in Condrieu but in neighbouring Cote-Rotie, where La Blonde du Seigneur is its cuvee. The blend is around 95% Syrah with 5% Viognier, co-fermented in the northern Rhone tradition, drawn from the lieux-dits Semon, Lancement and Maison Rouge. These steep, terraced slopes carry the schistous and granitic soils that define Cote-Rotie, and the estate works organically. The 2019 vintage in the northern Rhone combined warmth with an unexpectedly fresh profile, and Vernay's 2019 shows an almost cool-climate character, with vibrant acidity and chiselled tannins that give the wine a lifted, floral cast.

Vinification

Hand-harvested Syrah and Viognier are fermented together in stainless steel with only a small proportion of whole bunches, a restrained approach that keeps the wine fresh and detailed rather than dense. Following fermentation and gentle extraction, the wine is aged in barrels and large Stockinger foudres, with no evident new-oak imprint, so that whole-bunch spice and perfumed blue and red fruit lead. Malolactic fermentation completes in cask. The result is a medium-bodied, keenly structured Cote-Rotie with polished tannins, floral lift and a long, mineral finish.
