Tasting Notes

Giant Steps Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir offers an exceptional expression of Pinot Noir. Located on the steep slopes of the Warramate Ranges, the Sexton Vineyard shares its prestigious terroir with iconic Yarra producers such as Yarra Yering and Coldstream Hills. This unique positioning contributes to the wine’s remarkable depth and structure, showcasing a bold contrast to the more delicate styles found in Giant Steps’ Bastard Hill and Primavera offerings.

Each vintage captures the essence of the region’s mineral-driven soils and cool maritime influences, resulting in a Pinot Noir that balances rich, ripe red fruit flavors with subtle earthy undertones and refined tannins. This wine is crafted to highlight both power and elegance, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a distinctive and memorable Pinot Noir experience.

Giant Steps Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir is a testament to the meticulous vineyard management and winemaking expertise that define the Giant Steps label. Its vibrant bouquet, layered palate, and lingering finish make it a superb addition to any premium wine collection.

Critic Scores

From the Sexton vineyard in Gruyere planted in the late '90s. 100% destemmed, 22% new wood. More black fruits than red fruits, stewed rhubarb, a little earth and iodine, too. This follows through onto the darkly fruited, compact and firmly structured palate. The most closed of the four single-vineyard wines today but one that will reward at least a decade, or more, in your cellar.

The Sexton vineyard was planted in 1997. It’s a north-facing, exposed site, at 200 metres above sea level.
There’s no escaping the seriousness of this wine. It’s cool, spicy and complex, but it has heft and power, and is structurally firm (to say the least). This wine is both keen with mineral and flooded with floral character, the latter embedded in the fruit rather than flying off as aromatics. Pomegranate, dark cherries, blood and bone, alpine herbs, red roses, smoked cream, pepper and peppercorn, the latter bound to those red rose notes. It’s serious in style and seriously good.

Vineyard Cultivation

Sexton Vineyard is Giant Steps' estate home block, planted by founder Phil Sexton in 1997 at Gruyere in the Yarra Valley, on the lower slopes near the Warramate hills alongside iconic neighbours such as Yarra Yering and Coldstream Hills. Grey loam over clay and a range of Pinot Noir clones give a slightly richer, more structured wine that offers a contrast to Giant Steps' more delicate single-vineyard cuvees. As the original estate site, it is farmed with close attention and low intervention. The 2024 Yarra Valley season delivered bright, ripe red fruit with the freshness and perfume typical of this home-vineyard Pinot.

Vinification

Fruit was hand-picked from the estate vineyard and vinified in Giant Steps' minimal-intervention style. A portion of whole bunches was retained alongside destemmed fruit, with wild fermentation in open vessels and gentle plunging and pump-overs to manage extraction. After maceration the wine was pressed to French oak barriques, a measured proportion new, and left to complete natural malolactic fermentation on lees. The result is a fuller, structured yet perfumed Pinot Noir with sweet plum and cherry fruit, spice and fine tannin, made to contrast with the winery's lighter cuvees.
