Tasting Notes

Giovanni Rosso Barolo Cerretta 2016 stands as an exceptional representation of the prestigious Barolo appellation, meticulously crafted by renowned winemakers Davide Rosso and Andrea Delpiano. Sourced exclusively from the esteemed Serralunga d’Alba estate vineyards, this wine embodies the classic elegance and power that have earned Barolo its title as the “King of Wines.”

The 2016 vintage, carefully preserved in a premium private cellar, reflects the unique terroir of the Cerretta vineyard, known for its well-drained calcareous soils and an ideal microclimate. These conditions contribute to a wine with intense structure, deep concentration, and remarkable aging potential. The favorable weather throughout Piedmont in 2016 allowed for ideal ripening, resulting in a vintage celebrated for its balance, refined tannins, and profound depth.

Accoladed with an impressive 97 points from Kerin O'Keefe, a leading expert in Barolo wines, the Giovanni Rosso Barolo Cerretta 2016 reveals a beautifully complex bouquet featuring vibrant red cherries, aromatic dried herbs, and subtle floral undertones. Layers of licorice and warm spice add further complexity, while the palate impresses with a full-bodied richness, polished tannins, and a lingering, sophisticated finish.

Perfectly suited to complement robust Italian cuisine, aged cheeses, and rich meat dishes, this Barolo offers both immediate enjoyment and the promise of graceful evolution over time. Critic Scores

Rose, red-berry, camphor and dark-spice aromas slowly emerge in the glass. Showing Serralunga's hallmark of firm structure and finesse, the full-bodied, youthfully tense palate delivers juicy red cherry, raspberry compote, dried mint and licorice set against a backbone of noble tannins. Bright acidity keeps it impeccably balanced. Drink 2026–2056.

Intense, subtle strawberry with white-truffle and dried-flower aromas that follow through to a full body with firm, chewy tannins that are polished and beautiful. Needs time to soften. Muscular wine. Try after 2024.

The Giovanni Rosso 2016 Barolo Cerretta is a tight, focused and high-energy expression of Nebbiolo. Red and purple fruit aromas of cassis, dried cranberry and cherry provide pretty highlights, but ample space is given to those equally pretty aromas of licorice, campfire ash and candied orange peel that so deftly play supporting roles. To the palate, this is a glossy, polished wine with enough tannic kick to carry it forward for another 10 or 20 years of cellar aging.

Vineyard Cultivation

Giovanni Rosso, established in 1906 in Serralunga d'Alba, has evolved through four family generations into a precision-focused Barolo producer. The Ceretta vineyard occupies one of eight named parcels in the Serralunga terroir, characterised by white limestone-marl soils and south-facing exposure that ripen Nebbiolo across Piedmont's lengthy growing season. The house philosophy—'low yield means maximum yield'—reflects a commitment to quality concentration through severe pruning and careful canopy management. Davide Rosso, the current winemaker (fourth generation, since 2001), studied oenology in Alba and France, drawing inspiration from Burgundian precision and Bordeaux structure. The 2016 vintage in Barolo proved exceptional, with warm, dry conditions allowing Nebbiolo exceptional phenolic ripeness and aromatic expression.

Vinification

Ceretta 2016 represents Giovanni Rosso's refined approach to traditional Barolo winemaking. After hand-harvesting and careful sorting, the Nebbiolo fruit undergoes a long, cool fermentation in open-top vats with careful temperature management and regular maceration to extract colour, tannin and aromatic complexity. The wine then matures for approximately 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks (botti), where patient oak integration and gradual oxidative development create an elegant, age-worthy structure. The extended cask aging allows the wine's powerful tannins to polymerise and soften whilst retaining the focused mineral acidity and black cherry character that define serious Barolo.
