Critic Scores

One of Barolo’s most iconic bottlings, this gorgeous wine shows breeding and elegance despite the extreme heat of the vintage. It boasts a beautiful fragrance of red rose, violet and perfumed berry with a whiff of cake spices. The silky palate delivers succulent wild cherry, licorice, white pepper and cinnamon impeccably balanced by supple tannins and fresh acidity. Very impressive.

A landmark wine, the 2009 Barolo Monprivato does not disappoint. The wine shows a medium garnet color and offers a full bouquet of red rose, pressed flowers, wild berries, spice, tar and licorice. Some distant white truffle also makes a subtle appearance at the back. The mouthfeel is absolutely polished and clean with silky tannins, balanced acidity and firm textural support. This is a lovely edition of Barolo Monprivato to store in your cellars ten years or more

Very nervy and exciting. Light but with a hint of char after broad, sweet, transparent impression. Very flattering. Dry finish and alluring. Sinewy finish.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

The 2009 vintage from Monprivato reflects Giuseppe Mascarello's enduring focus on this distinguished single vineyard within Barolo. The growing season was shaped by Piedmont's continental climate patterns, allowing Nebbiolo fruit to achieve optimal ripeness whilst maintaining the structural acidity central to classical Barolo expression. Monprivato's limestone-marl soils provide the mineral foundation and natural drainage necessary for long-lived, complex wines. The vineyard's established plantings and careful canopy management ensured fruit quality suited to the extended production timeline associated with traditional Barolo winemaking.

Vinification

Following established Mascarello practice, the 2009 vintage was fermented in large wooden vessels, encouraging slow, steady fermentation and maximising natural tannin development. Skin contact extended through the fermentation phase, building colour and structural complexity without harsh extraction. The wine was subsequently aged in large neutral casks or concrete, a method that preserves Nebbiolo's inherent mineral character whilst allowing gradual aromatic development through controlled oxidation. Extended élevage and careful cellaring preceded the wine's release, ensuring classical Barolo maturity.
