Critic Scores

romas of woodland berry, wild herb, violet and camphor mingle together in the glass. Elegantly structured and boasting great intensity, the vibrant palate delivers crushed strawberry, cranberry, orange zest and licorice set against tightly wound but extremely refined tannins. Firm acidity provides the backbone and impeccable balance while a mineral note lends tension. Some may find this almost too ethereal, but others will be dazzled. Drink 2024–2034.

Shimmering, bright garnet red. Opens with notes of pomegranate, rose petals and peach, then ripe cherries. Good tension on the palate, opens with lots of finely-meshed tannin, vivid fruit of strawberry and raspberry, opens up continuously, very long finish.

Mascarello's legendary cru, from this historic 15-acre, southwest-facing plot not far from the town of Castiglione Falletto, never disappoints. The 2014 Barolo Monprivato is as engaging and as individual as I had hoped it would be. Still in its youth, the bouquet reaches out with wild berry and strawberry, and it has started to show unique tones of natural rubber, tropical fruit and peach—not at all what you might expect from a Nebbiolo, but very delicate and elegant nonetheless. Like every Monprivato vintage, it will take years in the bottle to reach its full potential. Still very closed, this one will only just begin to open after the summer.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

The Mascarello vineyard in Castiglione Falletto occupies limestone-rich soils on south-facing terrain, a position that concentrates flavours and promotes full phenolic ripeness in Nebbiolo. The 2014 growing season was moderate in temperature with even rainfall distribution, creating conditions that favoured concentration without excess. The vine rows benefit from natural air movement across the slope, minimising disease pressure and encouraging slow, steady ripening that builds complexity and fine-grained tannin development.

Vinification

Fruit was destemmed and fermented in large wooden vats at natural temperatures, a methodological anchor for the producer's traditional approach. Maceration lasted through the course of fermentation to achieve full tannin extraction without extraction of coarse matter. The resulting wine aged in large, older Slavonian oak casks for some three years, during which time it developed layered character through slow oxidative maturation. The producer does not filter or fine the finished wine, preserving its natural structure and textural complexity.
