Critic Scores

A common refrain regarding the La-Las is that they require a decade or more of cellaring to come around. In fact, they're often quite open and appealing soon after release, only to close down shortly thereafter. The 2017 Cote Rotie La Turque offers up hints of crushed stone and struck flint, smoky, bacon-fat aromas and ripe, mouthwatering blackberries. Full-bodied, creamy and rich, it's a powerful, concentrated effort that should still be drinking well in two decades. - Joe Czerwinski

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

The 2017 growing season produced one of the northern Rhône's finest vintages. La Turque's micaceous schist terroir delivered Syrah of remarkable perfume, elegance, and phenolic maturity. The warm, balanced growing season with adequate rainfall allowed optimal ripeness without stress. E. Guigal's established vineyard management—selective canopy work, sustainable soil practices, and mature vine age—captured concentrated, complex fruit. The 2017 vintage represented La Turque at its most harmonious: ripe, perfumed, structured, and with natural ageing potential. Terroir management ensured that the vintage's inherent quality translated into wines of notable complexity and longevity.

Vinification

Grapes underwent full destemming before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats with indigenous yeast populations. Guigal employed extended maceration and, for select parcels, partial whole-bunch fermentation to enhance aromatic expressiveness and textural refinement. Natural malolactic fermentation followed primary fermentation. The wine then entered its 42-month French oak élevage, during which careful racking and oxygen management allowed gradual phenolic integration and development of secondary and tertiary flavours characteristic of mature Côte-Rôtie. Systematic cellar work ensures proper phenolic evolution and aromatic development throughout maturation.
