Head Wines was established in 2006 by Alex Head in the Barossa, South Australia. The Head Red GSM is a multi-site blend that draws Grenache from the Barossa Valley floor, Shiraz from the higher, cooler Eden Valley, and Mataro (Mourvèdre) from around Nuriootpa, several parcels from old, low-yielding vines. The Barossa is a patchwork of soils and mesoclimates, and Head deliberately blends across these sub-regions to build complexity and freshness. The 2022 Barossa vintage was cooler and later than the run of warm years before it, giving fragrant, well-balanced fruit with bright natural acidity, ideal for the energetic, crunchy, 'bistro-style' red this wine aims for.

The three varieties are fermented separately to preserve their individual character, with Head favouring a lifted, fresh style over extraction and heavy oak. After fermentation the wine is matured in large, neutral oak formats, principally old foudres and 500-litre puncheons rather than new barriques, so the pure red-fruit, spice and floral character shows through unmasked. This gentle, seasoned-oak élevage keeps the wine juicy and vibrant while giving enough structural frame for medium-term cellaring. The finished blend is fresh, sapid and moreish, built for early enjoyment yet balanced enough to hold for a decade.
