Critic Scores

The flagship chardonnay from Rebecca and Tim Duffy from Holm Oak. Pale straw in the glass with inviting characters of grapefruit, green apple, lemon and stone fruit. There is a layer of fine spice along with hints of white flowers, lemon curd, nougat and dreamy oak flitting around. Drive is plentiful on the palate with a porcelain acidity setting a brisk cadence, pulling the ripe stone and citrus fruits across the tongue. Spicy French oak frames the scene and the wine trails off persistently.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Holm Oak Vineyards occupies 18 hectares in Tasmania's Tamar Valley near Rowella, with 2.5 hectares dedicated to chardonnay. The vineyard's gravelly basalt soils over clay, combined with diurnal temperature variations from elevations ranging 30–100 metres, preserve the acidity essential to cool-climate chardonnay. Vines are managed with north-south orientation to maximise sun exposure. The 2021 vintage presented characteristic Tasmanian conditions—cool maritime climate with moderate ripeness—producing grapes with bright acidity and restrained alcohol. Hand harvesting identified premium fruit parcels, supporting Holm Oak's commitment to quality fruit selection.

Vinification

Winemaker Bec Duffy directed The Wizard Chardonnay 2021 with whole-bunch pressing to capture free-run juice for elegance. The wine underwent natural fermentation in approximately 20% new French oak, allowing indigenous yeast to express the fruit's character. Seasonal malolactic fermentation (percentage varied with vintage) developed complexity whilst retaining freshness. Regular lees stirring during élevage built textural richness. Bottling occurred around 10 months post-harvest after achieving optimal phenolic development.
