Tasting Notes

The Gladstones Cabernet Sauvignon name comes from Dr. John Gladstone whose vinicultural research enabled plantings throughout Western Australia.

Critic Scores

Lovely wine this. Dense and rich but sits at medium weight, a sheath of cocoa powder tannins keeps dark plum and fig, date and nut characters internal, the wine stretches long and luxurious, supple and flowing. There’s lots of blue and dark fruit perfume with that mocha/coffee powder scent there too. Whiffs of bayleaf and sea spray complete a beautiful scent. Supple, succulent finish? Yes thanks. An elegant, athletic and fine cabernet wine which enthusiasts should line up for.

From the Batley Vineyard in the Wilyabrup subregion; hand-picked fruit, open fermented with wild yeast and matured in French barriques. Seemingly picked earlier than most, the colour not deep, a la the Englishman's claret of bygone days. On the plus side, it has excellent balance, no sign of green fruit, and can be enjoyed now as much as in 5 years.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Houghton, one of Western Australia's historic producers, sources the 2019 Gladstones Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaret River's distinguished terroir. The vineyard benefits from the region's Mediterranean-influenced climate—warm, dry summers moderated by ocean breezes—producing cabernet with ripe fruit flavours and refined structure. Gladstones, as a Margaret River sub-region, offers premium cabernet-sauvignon conditions with well-draining gravelly soils. The 2019 vintage presented ideal ripening conditions, allowing grapes to achieve full phenolic maturity whilst retaining freshness. Fruit selection emphasises parcels yielding wines of balance and ageing potential.

Vinification

Under Senior Winemaker Courtney Treacher's direction, the 2019 Gladstones Cabernet underwent classical fermentation with hands-on fruit selection and minimal cellar intervention. Fermentation extracted tannins carefully to achieve structure without excess bitterness. Maturation in oak—selected for subtle influence rather than dominance—allowed the fruit and vintage to express itself. Treacher's philosophy emphasises 'hands-on in the vineyard, hands-off in the winery,' allowing natural processes to guide wine development through fermentation and maturation.
