Superlative Clare! Grapefruit pulp, lemon zest, jasmine, bath salts and Thai herb notes stream across a bow of limestone-derived minerality and palate-whetting acidity. This is long, penetrative across a multitude of layers and yet, despite the razor-sharp definition, relaxed. There is nothing hard or abrasive about this. It flows long with alacrity in its step! This will reward patience in the cellar.

Tasted at the Armagh Hut with Sam and Tom Barry, the 2017 The Florita Rieslingis tight, taut and saline—it is mineral and tense, almost shale-y in its acid profile. It is powerful and driven and blisteringly good. Really good. It is yet to unfurl and offers notes of preserved lemon and lavender—is there turmeric and lanolin in there too? Boom. This is really good. Drink it now or in decades to come—it’s a sleeper. 2017 was a cooler, wetter year and higher yielding.

I’m all about this. It’s bright, limey, spicy, dried flowers, a little honey on toast richness creeping in, but gee, so fresh and energetic. Juicy, gently chalky and dusty in texture, citrus sherbet, that lime and floral thing is so lovely, and the finish goes so long, with a little lime in gin and tonic sweetness to close. Unreal. Benchmark Clare Riesling.

This has some attractive, reductive kick with a gently chalky edge and some complex spices and ginger, as well as lemons and white peaches. The palate has silky, sleek drive and treads a delicate line of balance. Long, taut finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Matured by the Barry family for your drinking pleasure. Finding its groove with maturity and offering up scents of sugar biscuit, arrowroot and ginger over fresher lime and green apple characters with a faint chamomile note in the mix. The palate has softened somewhat, suppleness married to a gentle core of grapefruity acidity, a nashi pear note appears amongst the similar characters found in the bouquet. There's a sense of mellowness here, though there's so much life and interest in this wine yet to come. Length of flavour and persistence of acidity is ultra pleasing, too. Ooh yes, here we go.

Vineyard Cultivation

Barry's 'The Florita' Riesling vineyard occupies the warm slate and quartzite soils of Clare Valley's elevated sites, providing natural acidity and mineral tension even during full-ripeness growing years. The vineyard sits at 450 metres elevation, maximising diurnal temperature variation between day and night and slowing sugar accumulation whilst maintaining aromatic concentration. The 2017 growing season brought moderate warmth and dry conditions, restricting sugar development and promoting late-harvest aromatic ripeness and phenolic development. Barry's vineyard practices emphasise balanced canopy management, selective leaf-plucking for sun exposure, and careful hand-harvesting to capture optimal ripeness at reduced sugar levels.

Vinification

Florita ferments in stainless steel at cool temperatures (12–14°C), preserving varietal aromatics of citrus, stone fruit, and floral notes whilst retaining the zesty, precise acidity that defines Clare Valley cool-climate Riesling. Spontaneous yeast fermentation develops layered complexity over several weeks without added nutrients or enzyme preparation. The wine undergoes partial malolactic fermentation to balance acidity and develop secondary fruit complexity. Extended lees contact (typically four to six months) builds texture and mid-palate richness without oxidative character, preserving slate-derived mineral precision and palate-cleansing finish.

Jim Barry Wines

Jim Barry Wines is an inaugural member of Australia's First Families of Wine. Founded back in 1959 by Jim and his wife Nancy, the winery has a great track record for producing high-quality wines particular in the realm of Riesling where the two helped establish the Clare Valley as a benchmark for the variety.

Jim Barry was the first qualified winemaker in the region having graduated as only the 17th student to gain a Degree in Oenology at the prestigious Roseworthy Agricultural College back in 1947. Having worked for 2 decades at the Clarevale Co-operative, he then went on to establish Taylors Wines in 1969.

10ha of vineyards throughout the subregion of Armagh and the greater Clare Valley are key to the longevity of Jim Barry wines. The terroir of Clare Valley with its night-time temperature-drops & limestone soils makes for great Riesling and provides the necessary scid and structure to assist long-term cellaring of the reds.

Although Jim Barry passed away in 2004, the winery is in good hands with the family still very much a part of the operation. His philosophy was to make wines that are both enjoyable on release and reward long term cellaring and he was posthumously given the 'Legends Hall of Fame' award in 2014. Jim's sons Peter, Mark & John all play a part and now 3rd generation Tom (Gourmet Traveller's 'Young Winemaker of the Year 2014) and Sam work as winemaker and commercial manager for Jim Barry Wines.

Clare Valley

Situated in the Mid North of South Australia, approximately 120 km north of Adelaide is one of Australia's oldest wine regions the Clare Valley. The area is broken up into three sub-regions, the Polish Hill River region to the east, the Central Clare Valley, and the Skillogalee Valley to the west.
