Very good colour, deep and plenty of purple in the hue, the bouquet dried herbs, thyme and sage, licorice and a hint of eucalypt 'forest floor'. The wine is full-bodied, concentrated and fleshy with sumptuous mouth-feel and fruit-sweetness at its heart. A hint of raisin, in a perfectly acceptable way, not overripe or 'dead fruit'. A statuesque shiraz that is beginning to drink very well but has many more years up its sleeve.

Largely standard vinification with individual blocks ex the Armagh Vineyard, 10 days on skins, some blocks given 3 weeks post-ferment maceration. Elegance isn't the aim of The Armagh, but the '17 vintage has made it easy. Richly flavoured with dark fruits, savoury tannins balance and lengthen the palate.

Vineyard Cultivation

The Armagh vineyard sits on deep red loam and ironstone gravel, classic Clare Valley Shiraz terroir conferring dark berry complexity, peppery spice, and fine, structured tannins with natural elegance. The vineyard occupies gentle south-facing slopes at 380 metres elevation, providing consistent ripening conditions and reliable natural acidity retention even in warm years. The 2017 vintage delivered warm, even ripening with strategic summer rainfall stress moderating sugar levels and enhancing phenolic ripeness and tannin development in the fruit. Barry practises precise canopy management, measured irrigation, and selective harvesting to build mid-palate weight and textural finesse rather than extractive intensity.

Vinification

Armagh ferments naturally in open-top wooden vats, utilising native yeasts and extended maceration to extract colour, tannin, and complexity across four to five weeks of skin contact and fermentation activity. Hand-plunging during fermentation maintains texture and prevents oxidation of colour compounds. The wine rests in French oak (a mix of new and used barrels, typically 15–20% new wood) for an extended period of 12–18 months, developing tertiary flavours of leather and spice whilst allowing oak tannins to integrate seamlessly into the wine structure. Careful élevage with minimal handling emphasises silky tannin development and wine stability.

Jim Barry Wines

Jim Barry Wines is an inaugural member of Australia's First Families of Wine. Founded back in 1959 by Jim and his wife Nancy, the winery has a great track record for producing high-quality wines particular in the realm of Riesling where the two helped establish the Clare Valley as a benchmark for the variety.

Jim Barry was the first qualified winemaker in the region having graduated as only the 17th student to gain a Degree in Oenology at the prestigious Roseworthy Agricultural College back in 1947. Having worked for 2 decades at the Clarevale Co-operative, he then went on to establish Taylors Wines in 1969.

10ha of vineyards throughout the subregion of Armagh and the greater Clare Valley are key to the longevity of Jim Barry wines. The terroir of Clare Valley with its night-time temperature-drops & limestone soils makes for great Riesling and provides the necessary scid and structure to assist long-term cellaring of the reds.

Although Jim Barry passed away in 2004, the winery is in good hands with the family still very much a part of the operation. His philosophy was to make wines that are both enjoyable on release and reward long term cellaring and he was posthumously given the 'Legends Hall of Fame' award in 2014. Jim's sons Peter, Mark & John all play a part and now 3rd generation Tom (Gourmet Traveller's 'Young Winemaker of the Year 2014) and Sam work as winemaker and commercial manager for Jim Barry Wines.
