Prüm is one of the finest estates in the Mosel. Founded by Johann Josef Prüm in 1911, the winery rapidly built a reputation for its racy, pure expressions of Riesling.

97 Points, Vinous

Bright and delicate bouquet with very fine slate aromas and very fine but fully ripe and even concentrated apricot aromas, clean palate, with a concentrated, even slightly jammy apricot fruit core but a firm yet filigreed structure, this is an intense, very elegant and savoury.

Tasting Notes

Graacher Himmelreich directly borders the southern edge of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard. The wines from this site often rival the quality of those from its more famous neighbour, especially in hot, dry years. Graacher wines attract with their racy acidity, a pronounced minerality (that reminds of crushed rock) and slightly different fruit aromas and flavors (more citrus). Often, the wines become accessible slightly earlier than the Wehlener Sonnenuhr and are deliciously mouth-watering when young.

Critic Scores

The 2024 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Auslese contains almost no botrytized fruit. Only the slightest note of zesty lemon breaks through on the shy nose. More air reveals a hint of mint sorbet. The palate, however, adds an intriguing sweetness that is so akin to the wonderfully zesty notions of green tangerine peel. The next wave of flavor pushes into greengage and juicy white peach notes, always tempered by vivid citrus. The 2024 has gorgeous linearity and such a tingling, sherbet-like insistence. It is simply wonderful and so utterly balanced

In spite of the generous ripeness, the dominant aromas and flavors are Amalfi lemons, yellow grapefruit and pomelo with some fresh herbal notes. Very bright and racy, the finish much drier than you might expect for this frankly sweet category. Long, energetic, herbal finish with fascinating grapefruit bitterness and salty minerality

The 2024 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese is pure and flinty on the intense and stony nose that reveals herbal and saline notes along with blackcurrant and dark plum skin aromas. Lush and precise on the palate, this is a concentrated yet refined and elegant, mouth-filling and textured Auslese based on ripe and partly overripe grapes.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Prum's Graacher Himmelreich vineyard occupies the Mosel's distinctive steeply south-westerly-facing slate slopes, where Riesling thrives in this iconic terroir renowned for aromatic precision. The slate soils retain and radiate heat throughout the growing season, extending ripening time and promoting both aromatic ripeness and noble rot development even in cooler years. The vineyard sits between 300 and 500 metres elevation on terraced slopes requiring intensive hand-cultivation and harvest practices. The 2023 vintage began cool before moderately warming through summer; 2024 delivered an early, warm growing season favouring sugar accumulation and concentrated flavour development. Prum maintains low-yield viticulture, hand-harvesting in multiple selective passes to assess ripeness and noble rot presence.

Vinification

Both Auslese (2023, 2024) and Kabinett (2023) ferment in stainless steel at controlled cool temperatures (8–12°C), preserving aromatic volatility and developing residual sweetness through arrested fermentation with native yeasts. Indigenous yeasts conduct slow fermentation over several months, building complexity and fine acidity balance throughout the fermentation. Lees contact remains minimal to retain aromatic clarity and primary fruit character. Prum bottles the wines without fining or filtration, preserving mineral tension, aromatic precision, and volatile compounds. The 2023 and 2024 selections reflect vintage character: cool 2023 emphasising bright citrus and mineral notes; warmer 2024 showing deeper stone fruit and tropical notes.
