Made from hand-selected Riesling grapes grown in the vineyards of the Graacher Himmelreich in the Mosel region of Germany, this wine is bursting with flavor and personality

96 Points, James Suckling

Subtle notes of yellow peach and pollen introduce this gorgeously sunny yet complex Spätlese, flavors of tangerine and preserved quince drench the palate in waves of zesty sweet-tart fruit, also a depth of smoke, slate and struck flint in the backdrop.

Tasting Notes

Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese is a very special wine. Made from hand-selected Riesling grapes grown in the vineyards of the Graacher Himmelreich in the Mosel region of Germany, this wine is bursting with flavor and personality. The grapes are harvested late in the season, ensuring maximum ripeness and concentration of flavors. This Spätlese displays a bright, golden color and a nose of stone fruits, citrus, and honey. On the palate, it is rich and round with flavors of apricots, peaches, and a hint of minerality. This wine is perfect for pairing with spicy foods, as its sweetness helps balance out the heat. It is a true expression of the terroir of the Mosel and a testament to the winemaking skills of Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm.

Critic Scores

Striking nose of garden herbs with just a hint wet earth underlining the delicate white tree fruit aromas. Stunning concentration and energy on the super-straight medium-bodied palate. Very long, almost perfectly balanced finish that is surprising for this category at this early stage in the wine’s development. Great slate expression. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese is rather closed. Distant fruit appears as though behind glass where you can see but not touch. The palate is a juicy, rounded but tingling picture of tangerine. Aromatic, deliciously tart but wonderfully ripe, with that scented, balancing, zesty tang of tangerine peel. The 2022 shows poised balance, sweetness, extended, aromatic length and real elegance. (Medium)

his powerfully concentrated yet fresh-fruited sip is a touch more inviting young than the more nervous Wehlener Sonnenuhr this vintage. Flavours of white grapefruit and green apples are intensely ripe but pure and pristine, etched by strikes of lime and salt. A delightfully fruity, off-dry wine with a kiss of tangerine sweetness on the finish. Ready now but will improve further.

Vineyard Cultivation

The Prüm family has stewarded vineyards in the Middle Mosel since 1911, now managing 22 hectares across five celebrated sites. Graacher Himmelreich, one of their crown jewels, occupies less steeply sloped terrain than Wehlener Sonnenuhr, with deeper, mineral-rich soils that serve as water reservoirs during dry spells. The blue-grey Devonian slate gives way to pronounced minerality in the wines. Approximately 90% of the estate's vines remain ungrafted, slate's natural phylloxera resistance proving advantageous. The 2022 growing season brought early ripening driven by warm weather in May and summer heat; abundant September rainfall allowed shriveled berries to plump with juice, preserving aromatic freshness despite accelerated development.

Vinification

Grapes harvested in early September 2022 underwent traditional Mosel processing. The estate employs entirely spontaneous fermentation without added yeast, allowing indigenous microflora to guide the transformation. Harvested fruit was gently pressed to separate juice from solids, with fermentation proceeding slowly in temperature-controlled stainless steel. The Spätlese designation indicates moderately high ripeness—Oechsle values yielding wines of delicate residual sweetness. Extended maturation occurred on fine lees, developing complexity whilst retaining the wine's characteristic freshness and mineral precision.
