Made from hand-selected Riesling grapes grown in the vineyards of the Graacher Himmelreich in the Mosel region of Germany, this wine is bursting with flavor and personality

96 Points, James Suckling

Subtle notes of yellow peach and pollen introduce this gorgeously sunny yet complex Spätlese, flavors of tangerine and preserved quince drench the palate in waves of zesty sweet-tart fruit, also a depth of smoke, slate and struck flint in the backdrop.

Tasting Notes

Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese is a very special wine. Made from hand-selected Riesling grapes grown in the vineyards of the Graacher Himmelreich in the Mosel region of Germany, this wine is bursting with flavor and personality. The grapes are harvested late in the season, ensuring maximum ripeness and concentration of flavors. This Spätlese displays a bright, golden color and a nose of stone fruits, citrus, and honey. On the palate, it is rich and round with flavors of apricots, peaches, and a hint of minerality. This wine is perfect for pairing with spicy foods, as its sweetness helps balance out the heat. It is a true expression of the terroir of the Mosel and a testament to the winemaking skills of Weingut Joh. Jos. Prüm.

Critic Scores

This great Spatlese from the Graacher Himmelreich has everything we hope for from this famous site: excellent concentration and delicacy on the barely medium-bodied palate, terrific slatey character and a broad spectrum of aromas that range from white flowers and peaches to blackcurrants. Super-stony and precise finish. All of this has a wonderful spring-like freshness that makes it irresistible. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese offers a yeasty aroma with a hint of flint and a slight touch of mint. The palate showcases pure Mirabelle and gentle sweetness, with exquisite delineation and a supple sweetness highlighted by an exquisitely pure lemon tone.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Graacher Himmelreich's southwest-facing aspect and water-retentive deeper soils proved invaluable during the 2023 growing season. The Prüm estate's careful site management—utilising natural soil reserves and selective canopy practices—enabled the vineyard to maintain equilibrium as the vintage presented challenges. Early spring bud break was followed by a dramatic shift in late July when cooler weather and significant rainfall arrived, creating disease pressure throughout August. The estate's ungrafted vines on slate soils benefited from excellent drainage, minimising rot risk. Intensive sorting and selective harvesting were essential to isolate the finest fruit amidst challenging conditions.

Vinification

September and early October 2023 harvest proceeds reflected the vintage's labour-intensive character. Fruit selection was rigorous: bunches were examined externally and internally to separate quality grapes from compromised berries before processing. The estate maintained its hallmark spontaneous fermentation without introduced yeasts, allowing the wine's mineral terroir to express itself. Fermentation in stainless steel occurred gradually, with extended lees contact developing the wine's structure and complexity. The 2023 Spätlese absorbed the generous water of the growing season, producing wines with pronounced extract and layered character distinct from the mineral-forward 2022 profile.
