Tasting Notes

The Prüm family has been producing Riesling in Welhen on the steep riverbanks of the Mosel since 1911. They have perfected their styles––employing only indigenous yeasts––and offer a complex selection of dry to sweet Riesling.

The 2021 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese greets one with an appealing and magnificently complex nose of anise, orange zest, poached pear, yellow peach, jasmine, smoke, and candied pineapple. The wine coats the palate with intense fruity, ripe, yet refreshing flavors. It is impressively present and aromatic and leaves a hugely long and assertive finish. The aftertaste is beautifully focused and led by smoke and candied grapefruit. What a stunningly complex and playful Auslese.

Critic Scores

Still very youthful on the nose, this is crammed with ripe peach, plus more delicate notes of pineapple and mangosteen. It’s a minor miracle that this kind of concentration can be packed into such a sleek, medium-bodied palate. What an amazing mouthfeel this has thanks to the seamless integration of slatey acidity and ripeness. Very long finish with spot-on balance. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

While tightly wound in youth and too nervous to express itself fully, there’s a core of sun-drenched peach and yellow cherry lusciousness that pulsates from within here. It’s still subtle on the nose, but the palate can’t hide the intensity of fruit and swirls of honey and hibiscus nectar waiting to unfurl. Delicate sweetness is balanced by a lifting spray of minerality and a spine of laser-edged acidity. Hold until 2030 at least; it’s a wine to enjoy over decades.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Wehlener Sonnenuhr represents Joh Jos Prum's premier vineyard—a steeply terraced site climbing to 70% gradient on the Middle Mosel's south-southwest-facing slopes. The vineyard's celebrated geology comprises deep, weather-beaten grey Devonian slate with minimal topsoil, demanding intense manual labour yet yielding wines of exceptional mineral character. The Prüm family's century-old tenure here has refined their understanding of optimal ripeness timing for each site. The 2022 growing season—marked by warm May growth, sustained summer heat, and early fruit maturation—allowed the estate to achieve full Auslese-level ripeness (higher Oechsle values indicating noble, ripe character) whilst preserving the acidity and aromatic complexity essential to these premium wines.

Vinification

Auslese-level fruit, harvested in mid-September 2022 at elevated ripeness, underwent gentle pressing to preserve juice quality without excessive extraction. The estate's rigorous spontaneous fermentation proceeded in stainless steel without any added yeast, allowing native microflora to develop the wine's profile slowly. Extended maturation on fine lees—typically lasting months—encouraged the development of yeasty, floral complexity characteristic of noble Mosel Rieslings. The resulting wine balances the 2022 vintage's preserved freshness with the higher residual sweetness appropriate to Auslese classification, yielding a wine of delicate but pronounced character.
