Tasting Notes

Aromas of blackberry and white pepper with hints of spice as you would expect from good use of oak. From the first mouthful it’s a flavour bomb in your mouth, with its sweet black fruit in the front though to the seductive French oak on the very back of the palate, this along with its silky tannins. Should leave one very satisfied indeed.

The two Shiraz vineyards from which this wine is sourced complement each other well – The Marananga block provides intense, old vine produce with particular “blue fruit” offerings. The Nuriootpa block provides more “black fruits." The oldest vines used are 119 years old.

Critic Scores

Beautifully named, The Bogan has become a finer offering over the years. An assemblage of estate shiraz vines planted in 1899 and 1960s, it seems to have a little more clarity, balance and space than past releases. It's still Barossa through and through: rich in dark berry fruits, spices, violets and earthen depth, but tension and a savoury shape has replaced the pure horsepower of old. Best drunk in your favourite flanny shirt watching Bathurst on telly ... actually anytime is a good choice. It's a beauty from a cracking vintage.

Coffee and charred meats mix with berry compote on the nose. The palate is tight and needs time to unfurl—there's plenty of fruit in this full-bodied red yet it's reluctant to show off. The tannins are firm yet fine with a lick of salty licorice. Give this considered 'bogan' time to reveal its full potential 20 Dec 2023

About this Wine

Kaesler

Kaesler is a Barossa Valley winery, through and through. The Kaesler family first settled on the estate in 1845 and by the mid-1890s they had planted vineyards and winemaking was in full swing. The estate was in the family’s hands until 1986, but it wasn’t until 1999, when winemaker Reid Bosworth came along, that the Kaesler wine legacy jumped back in to gear.

With a focus on old-vine Shiraz, Kaesler has made a name for itself as a Barossa Valley stalwart on the back of its Kaesler Old Bastard, The Bogan, Alte Reben and Stonehorse wines.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
