Tasting Notes

Kaesler WOMS is the quintessential Australian blend, the perfect mix of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon that produces a complex but rich, classic dry red wine. Referred to as a “Weapon of Mass Seduction” (WOMS). The limited edition WOMS is only crafted in years that yield outstanding vintage quality. The 2022 WOMS is a blend of 59% Shiraz and 41% Cabernet Sauvignon from select old vine parcels that are of immense concentration and fruit depth. Aged in French Oak for 18 months prior to bottling.

Critic Scores

The 2022 WOMS release sees a blend of 59/41% shiraz/cabernet sauvignon in the classic Aussie red style. It smells terrific, with its canvas of pure dark and red fruits, dreamy French oak, spice, roasting meats, earth and dark chocolatey tones. Ditto on the palate, with its graceful line, fine tannin architecture and sense of grace as it slowly fades from view. Weapon of Mass Seduction indeed. A great release for this wine.

Dark red, inky and opaque in the glass. Opulent and concentrated aromas of blackberry, satsuma plum, bramble, iodine, ferrous earth and sweet spice. Firm, fleshy, structured and powerful on the palate. There's a pure drive of dark fruits, mocha, sweet, spicy oak and shapely tannin. The length is impressive and there's plenty of vitality and brightness in the fruit 17 Jan 2025

It’s a 59/41 split of 1961 planted Shiraz and 1985 planted Cabernet. The colour is bright garnet and purple, exuding brightness and vibrancy. Aromas of distinctly blue fruit with a red cherry lift. More medium weight than the ’21 vintage, displaying a bright elegance and refreshing purity. Fine chalky tannins and lightly applied oak sit comfortably with the bright fruit characters.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

WOMS (likely an acronym reflecting specific vineyard blocks) sources from Kaesler's oldest Shiraz parcels, with vines dating to the 1960s–70s plantings, plus some original 1890s-era dry-grown Shiraz. Cabernet adds structure and longevity to the blend. The 2022 Barossa season delivered warm, stable ripening conditions ideal for Shiraz–Cabernet maturation across complementary phenolic profiles. Kaesler's commitment to old-vine expression means these parcels contribute concentration, complexity, and age-worthiness beyond what younger vineyards deliver. The vineyard's slate-influenced soils—characteristic of premium Barossa microclimates—impart mineral undertones. Dry farming and sustainable viticulture minimise intervention, allowing the terroir to define the wine's character.

Vinification

WOMS Shiraz Cabernet 2022 reflects Kaesler's classical winemaking approach. Separate harvesting and fermentation of Shiraz and Cabernet allowed precise ripeness management suited to each varietal's phenolic development curve. Open-vat fermentation employed indigenous yeast, with extended maceration extracting colour, tannin, and savoury complexity. Post-fermentation aging occurred in large-format oak—predominantly 2700-litre foudres and older wooden vessels—avoiding new oak's dominating influence. The blend was assembled after maturation, balancing Shiraz's elegance with Cabernet's structure. The resulting wine demonstrates Kaesler's reputation for consistent 90-plus-point ratings and age-worthy depth.

About this Wine

Kaesler

Kaesler is a Barossa Valley winery, through and through. The Kaesler family first settled on the estate in 1845 and by the mid-1890s they had planted vineyards and winemaking was in full swing. The estate was in the family’s hands until 1986, but it wasn’t until 1999, when winemaker Reid Bosworth came along, that the Kaesler wine legacy jumped back in to gear.

With a focus on old-vine Shiraz, Kaesler has made a name for itself as a Barossa Valley stalwart on the back of its Kaesler Old Bastard, The Bogan, Alte Reben and Stonehorse wines.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
