Tasting Notes

Kooyong Massale Pinot Noir is a vibrant expression of Mornington Peninsula terroir, crafted from sustainably grown Pinot Noir grapes. This wine showcases lifted aromas of dark cherry, wild strawberry, and pomegranate, complemented by earthy undertones and subtle oak spice. On the palate, it offers generous flavours of morello cherry and raspberry, supported by supple, savoury tannins and a bright cranberry-like acidity, culminating in a fine, long, and intricately detailed finish.

Kooyong Estate, established in 1996 by Giorgio and Dianne Gjergja, is situated in the cool-climate region of Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. The estate focuses on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, practising sustainable viticulture with a commitment to expressing the unique characteristics of their vineyards. Vineyard Cultivation

Kooyong was established in 1996 by the Gjergja family and is a specialist Pinot Noir and Chardonnay estate on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, part of the Port Phillip Estate group. The wines are entirely estate-grown, vinified and bottled, farmed sustainably across the estate's cool, maritime vineyards around Tuerong. 'Massale' is Kooyong's approachable regional Pinot Noir, blended from across the estate plantings on the peninsula's ancient, free-draining soils. The 2024 growing season on the Mornington Peninsula delivered fresh, aromatic fruit, giving the bright raspberry, strawberry and red-cherry character and savoury spice noted for the wine.

Vinification

Grapes were hand-harvested and largely destemmed, with a whole-bunch component in some parcels, and fermented in small open vessels using a mix of wild and cultured yeast, with gentle plunging for supple extraction. After pressing the wine completed malolactic fermentation and was matured in French oak, only a small portion new, for roughly ten months so the oak supports rather than dominates. The result is fresh and aromatic, with morello cherry and raspberry fruit, firm yet fine tannins and a polished, moreish finish.
