Tasting Notes

Avni PN is focused and flavorful, yet harmonious and balanced, with an overlying elegance and velvety mouthfeel. Red fruits dominate the flavor profile with some Black Cherry, spice, black tea, fresh herbs, and a hint of Black Cherry, tar and rose petal, finishing with a round texture. It is versatile, pairing well with hot smoked salmon and roasted poultry, even grilled meats.

Vineyard Notes
Nearly 32% of the Avni Pinot Noir comes from selected blocks of the Lingua Franca Estate. The remaining 68% comes from our best neighboring vineyards in the Eola-Amity Hills, including Hope Well- elevating the complexity while retaining the round, savory character of this cuvée, but also from the South Salem Hills to Yamhill-Carlton. 2021 will count among the most regionally representative we have ever made.

Production Notes
Hand-harvested, sorted and destemmed, the grapes were fed bin by bin (not pumped) into medium and large sized stainless steel and cement fermenting tanks and then spontaneously fermented with wild yeast. 10% of the fruit for Avni Pinot Noir was not destemmed and went whole cluster into airtight tanks. The wines aged in 27% new and 73% old French oak barriques for 12 months and 4 in tank as the final assemblage prior to bottling.

Critic Scores

Beautiful cherries and dried wild strawberry on the nose, together with dried orange peel, mild spices and a touch of cocoa. Tense and well structured, vibrant and fresh, with medium body, lively acidity and a zesty, crunchy finish. Drink or hold.

A red with verve and tension balanced by vibrant cherry, raspberry, green tea and forest floor accents that finish with sleek tannins. Drink now through 2033. (TF)

Fruit for this Pinot Noir comes from four appellations, including the Eola-Amity, Mt Pisgah, Yamhill-Carlton and the Van Duzer Corridor. Ripe aromas of smashed blackberries, hot stone and ocean air jump from the glass. The palate is intensely structured, with 10% of Pinot undergoing carbonic maceration. Wild red berries, white pepper and mixed savoury herbs. Drinking Window: 2025 - 2031 - Tasted by: Clive Pursehouse

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Lingua Franca, founded in 2015 by Larry Stone in the Eola-Amity Hills of the Willamette Valley, makes Avni as its regionally drawn Pinot Noir cuvée. The 2023 blends a core of estate fruit with selected neighbouring vineyards across four appellations - the Eola-Amity Hills, Mount Pisgah, Yamhill-Carlton and the Van Duzer Corridor - to build a wine that reads as a portrait of the northern Willamette. Vines sit on the region's volcanic Jory and sedimentary marine soils, and the cooling Pacific air drawn through the Van Duzer gap keeps the fruit fresh. The 2023 season was warm and generous in Oregon, giving ripe, well-coloured Pinot Noir with retained acidity.

Vinification

Fruit was hand-harvested, sorted and largely destemmed, then fed bin by bin into stainless steel and cement tanks and fermented spontaneously on wild yeast. A portion of the crop, around 10%, went in whole cluster, and a small share underwent carbonic maceration to lift aromatics and add crunchy, structured lift. Cap management was gentle to keep tannins supple. After pressing, the wine aged in French oak barriques, a modest proportion new and the balance older, for roughly twelve months before a period of assemblage in tank ahead of bottling, yielding the tense, savoury, red-fruited style noted by critics.
