Tasting Notes

Pale yellow-green color with a predominantly mineral aroma of flint, river stone, green apples, and green olives, later fresh herbs, lemon zest and yellow flowers emerge. On the palate it is precise and taught, with wet stone and saline notes, crisp green apples and thyme. The finish is persistent and firm, with a mouthwatering mineral quality. This is a vintage with finely chiseled features at Bunker Hill. Our Bunker Hill Estate Vineyard in the South Salem Hills and is the oldest source of fruit for any of our wines, having been planted in 1995 to CH76. It is among the earliest of the Dijon-clone plantings in Oregon, situated on the remnant of a pioneer farm.

Vinification:

The grapes were picked to maximize freshness and tension in the finished wine. 67% Whole cluster pressed, 33% crushed and then pressed, settled in tank for 24 hours on average, then barrel fermented in a combination of 26% new, 600 liter puncheons and 74% old French oak barriques and puncheons from diverse coopers. Full malolactic fermentation completed spontaneously in each barrel. After 11 months aging on lees, the wines were combined in tank with their lees for five months prior to bottling.

Critic Scores

From the Bunker Hill estate site in the south Salem Hills was planted in 1995 to some of the region's first Dijon clone Chardonnay. The brilliance of minerality and freshness is balanced wonderfully with a core of juicy citrus. Aromatics of dried chamomile, seaspray and lemon zest transition to a palate that holds juicy Meyer lemon pulp, tangerine rind and fresh-cut Granny Smith apples. Built for ageing, it is 67% whole cluster pressed, then barrel fermented for 11 months ageing on lees. It's a brilliant wine with serious precision and longevity.

Estate bottled, the 2022 Chardonnay Bunker Hill is the counterpart to the Chardonnay Estate. It pours a bright pale yellow with a tinge of green and has a lovely incense of delicate toast lifting from the glass, followed by notes of white flowers, fresh green pear, and pleasing reduction. This wine comes from a site where the grapes get thicker skins from the wind, leading to firmer structure, and on the palate, this wine is medium to full-bodied, with a pithy, chalky texture. Drink 2024-2034.

The 2022 Chardonnay Bunker Hill is dreamy, blending confectionary spices with chamomile and mint before giving way to freshly sliced nectarines and lime zest. This is supple and round with depths of ripe apple and pear, further intensified by brisk acidity as crunchy mineral tones slowly saturate. A saline tinge lingers along with sweet tannins as the mouth waters for more through the long and wickedly fresh finale.

Vineyard Cultivation

The Bunker Hill Estate Vineyard sits in the South Salem Hills at the southern end of the Willamette Valley and is the oldest fruit source for any Lingua Franca wine. It was planted in 1995, to CH76 and among the first Dijon-clone Chardonnay in Oregon, on a remnant pioneer farm. The site is notably wind-exposed, which thickens the grape skins and gives the wine firmer structure and a chiselled, mineral character. Soils here favour freshness and tension over weight. In 2022 the fruit was picked to maximise that tension and cut, the growing season delivering ripe but taut Chardonnay with the flinty, saline signature the vineyard is known for.

Vinification

The grapes were picked early to hold acidity, with 67% whole-cluster pressed and the remaining 33% crushed and then pressed. The juice settled in tank for around 24 hours before barrel fermentation, which took place in a combination of about 26% new 600-litre puncheons and 74% older French oak barriques and puncheons from a diverse group of coopers. Full malolactic fermentation completed spontaneously in each barrel. After eleven months ageing on lees, the wine was combined in tank with its lees for a further five months before bottling, an élevage designed to preserve the site's precision and mouth-watering mineral persistence.
