Tasting Notes

Floral notes leap out of the glass of the 100% Estate-grown Chardonnay 2022, with notes of jasmine, gardenia and lemon blossom. The contribution of low-yielding CH548 blocks seem to impress their character on the late vintage. The palate is round and fresh, entering with green apple and creamy lemon, which develop into chamomile and sea salt, with a round-textured, long finish of floral and saline notes.

Tasting Notes
Lingua Franca Estate Chardonnay is a permanent addition to our wine portfolio. Its aroma is a combination of creamy lemon custard, grapefruit zest, jasmine and vanilla. While it has the richest aroma and texture of all our Chardonnays, it is still lively and bright, lifted by its underlying energy; an excellent expression of our vineyard.

Vineyard Notes
Lingua Franca Estate Chardonnay are sourced 80% from the original blocks planted by Larry Stone in 2012 and now augmented by two additional blocks grafted over to Chardonnay from Pinot Noir in 2018 and 2019. The newer blocks will have more of an influence in coming years as they mature.

Production Notes
The fruit field sorted, hand-picked, then 80% whole cluster pressed, 20% crushed and pressed, then settled in tank for 24 hours on average, barrel fermented with wild yeast in a combination of 27% new, lightly toasted 500- liter puncheons, and 73% old French oak puncheons and barriques from diverse coopers. Full malolactic fermentation completed spontaneously in each barrel. After 11 months aging on lees, the wines were combined in tank with their lees for five months prior to bottling.

Critic Scores

The medium yellow/straw-colored 2022 Chardonnay Estate has a forward feel in the glass, with a great nose offering notes of bright flinty reduction, green apples, lime zest, and white flowers. Medium-bodied and long on the palate, it has persistent drive, with a pure savory feel and a graceful saline finish with a note of lime pith. It will drink well over the next 10 years.

Crushed stones and flint combine with freshly sliced pear, ginger and hints of sweet mint as the 2022 Chardonnay Estate blossoms in the glass. It's lifted and energetic, with an air of inner florals resonating over a core of ripe orchard fruits. Incredibly juicy yet also loaded with zesty tension, the 2022 finishes long and staining, nearly salty in character yet still remarkably fresh. Beautiful.

Vineyard Cultivation

Lingua Franca's Estate Vineyard lies in the heart of the Eola-Amity Hills, in the northern Willamette Valley, planted by founder Larry Stone from 2015 with Dominique Lafon and Thomas Savre guiding site selection. The Estate Chardonnay is drawn from the home vineyard, farmed with an emphasis on freshness on the region's volcanic Jory and related basalt-derived soils. The Eola-Amity Hills are cooled by Pacific air pulled through the Van Duzer Corridor, which drops afternoon temperatures sharply and preserves the taut acidity and savoury, saline drive that mark the estate style. The 2022 season yielded Chardonnay with bright reduction, green-apple cut and a long, mineral line.

Vinification

In keeping with the estate's Burgundian, low-intervention approach, the fruit was whole-cluster pressed with only a small share crushed, then settled briefly before barrel fermentation on native yeast. Both primary and malolactic fermentation ran spontaneously and finished in individual barrels. Ageing was in a mix of new 600-litre puncheons and neutral larger casks and older French oak, for around eleven months sur lie, after which the wine rested in tank on its lees before bottling. The labour-intensive barrel work rounds the district's natural acidity while retaining the flinty reduction, lime-pith cut and saline finish the critics describe.
