Tasting Notes

"A very good expression of Sicilian Syrah with the typical dark fruit and spice character in combination with great balance, freshness and drinkability. Perfect with a slowly roasted Pyrenees lamb with savory Mediterranean herbs and a lamb jus.” BY RAIMONDS TOMSONS, BEST SOMMELIER OF THE WORLD IN 2017 AND 2023 (A.S.I.)

Lionel Messi, a true wine enthusiast, sought to create a collection that reflected his values of excellence and dedication. To bring this vision to life, he entrusted Marco Maci, one of Italy’s most renowned winemakers.

Sicily, with its rich winemaking tradition, benefits from its Mediterranean climate, providing ideal conditions for grape cultivation. Syrah vineyards span hills and coastal areas, where abundant sunlight lends unique characteristics to the grapes. Sicily’s contrasts are reflected in its wines, full of identity and personality.

Vineyard Cultivation

The GOAT 10 Syrah draws from Sicily's diverse terroirs, where Syrah has established itself as a compelling alternative varietal, particularly in the warmer, drier southern and eastern zones. The 2022 fruit likely originated from higher-altitude sites or cooler microclimates within Sicily to preserve aromatic definition and acidity—critical for Syrah quality in the Mediterranean. Sicilian soils, typically volcanic (in the east, near Etna) or calcareous limestone (inland), offer distinct mineral profiles that shape wine character. Viticulture emphasises water efficiency and natural pest management suited to the semi-arid climate.

Vinification

Sicilian Syrah of this commercial profile typically undergoes warm fermentation with moderate skin contact lasting one to two weeks, building colour and gentle tannin structure suited to varietal expression. Post-fermentation ageing in a combination of stainless steel and neutral or lightly-toasted oak for four to six months preserves the varietal's peppery, darker-berry character whilst introducing subtle textural complexity. Blending strategy and fining are standard practice; bottling occurs after minimal settling.

About this Wine

Sicily

According to Greek legend, the god of wine Dionysus was the first to have planted a vineyard in Sicily; kick-starting the viticulture of the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It's one of the biggest wine producing regions in Italy with Veneto and Emilio Romagna the only two Italian regions that produce more. In all, the island has an impressive 134,000 hectares under vine although this area is shrinking year by year. This region produces a wide range of wines, both table and dessert wines and the grapes most famously grown there are the Nero d’Avola and Catorrato varietals. Nerello Mascalese is used to make the Etna Rosso DOC wine from the volcanic Mt Etna and Frappato is a the main grape of the Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG.

Sicily is blessed with the most favorable climate. The summers are hot and it hardly rains, and the winters are not that cold and frost is rare. The Mediterranean climate is ideal for growing wine grapes as the coastal winds drying out grapes overnight. Because of the warm and relatively dry climate, there are less risk of rot and mildew among the grapes, so chemical sprays are rarely used. The soil of Sicily is rocky and enriched with minerals that absorb the heat during the day and release it at night, which helps the grape vines maintain an even temperature while the air around it gets cooler.
