Tasting Notes

The friendship between Ernst Loosen, of the Dr. Loosen Estate in Germany, and Peter Barry, of Jim Barry Wines, Australia, began in 1995 at the London Wine Fair. Forged out of mutual respect for the noble variety Riesling, this collaboration of ideas pays homage to the wine making techniques used by the Loosen family for generations, and the vineyard practices of the Barry family.

The German-style Riesling made in Australia is called Wolta Wolta, (Aboriginal for 'good water') in honour of one the Barry family's most significant and successful land purchases, which later became known as Lodge Hill. The Australian-style Riesling, made with grapes from the Erdener Treppchen Vineyard in Germany, is called Walhalla, (pronounced Valhalla) named after the majestic hall ruled over by Odin in Norse mythology.

It was no simple task for an Australian winemaker to make a German-style Riesling and vice versa, but when each winemaker can draw on forty years of experience of their counterpart, the possibilities are genuinely intriguing, and even though Peter and Tom Barry were uncertain they could make such a different style of Riesling, they were delighted with the outcome.

This project is not about sales. This is a project of passion, designed to test the skills, explore the possibilities, and hopefully, get people thinking about Riesling in a different way.

The second it is in the mouth it has a silk like softness in its acid, the fruit weight starts early and drives deep through the palate. A richness to the fruit, starting with yellow melons exotic fruits moving through citrus brown lime and mineral/ wet slate. Laced with tension and softness

Plush, fuller flavoured, set to mid weight, slippery, intense, slate and steel, lemon and lime, ginger and green almond. Crackling minerality, stony notes, savoury. Shit yeah! This has it all. In youth, the pucker and chew something else, otherworldly compared to rank and file riesling. Leafy herbal notes, blackcurrant, more to add to the shopping cart of descriptors. Vineyard Cultivation

LoosenBarry pairs Ernst Loosen of Germany's Dr. Loosen estate with the Barry family of Jim Barry Wines, a friendship that began at the London Wine Fair in 1995 out of a shared devotion to Riesling. Wolta Wolta, meaning 'good water', is made in Australia from the Barrys' Lodge Hill vineyard in the Clare Valley, honouring one of the family's most important land purchases. The vineyard sits on the elevated, continental Clare plateau, where slate-influenced soils and cool nights preserve the taut acidity and lime and slate characters central to the wine. The 2023 Clare Valley vintage produced ripe, intense fruit while retaining the crackling minerality and drive of the style.

Vinification

Following the Loosen family's traditional Mosel approach, the fruit was gently handled, pressed and settled, then fermented with wild yeasts in large-format German oak, marrying the Barrys' Clare fruit with German winemaking technique. For this dry expression the fermentation was taken close to dryness, leaving a fuller-flavoured, mid-weight wine with a silky acid line rather than overt residual sugar. Extended time on fine lees adds the plush texture and depth described by reviewers, while the neutral large oak keeps the focus on the slate, lemon-lime and stony, savoury minerality of the site.

Jim Barry Wines

Jim Barry Wines is an inaugural member of Australia's First Families of Wine. Founded back in 1959 by Jim and his wife Nancy, the winery has a great track record for producing high-quality wines particular in the realm of Riesling where the two helped establish the Clare Valley as a benchmark for the variety.

Jim Barry was the first qualified winemaker in the region having graduated as only the 17th student to gain a Degree in Oenology at the prestigious Roseworthy Agricultural College back in 1947. Having worked for 2 decades at the Clarevale Co-operative, he then went on to establish Taylors Wines in 1969.

10ha of vineyards throughout the subregion of Armagh and the greater Clare Valley are key to the longevity of Jim Barry wines. The terroir of Clare Valley with its night-time temperature-drops & limestone soils makes for great Riesling and provides the necessary scid and structure to assist long-term cellaring of the reds.

Although Jim Barry passed away in 2004, the winery is in good hands with the family still very much a part of the operation. His philosophy was to make wines that are both enjoyable on release and reward long term cellaring and he was posthumously given the 'Legends Hall of Fame' award in 2014. Jim's sons Peter, Mark & John all play a part and now 3rd generation Tom (Gourmet Traveller's 'Young Winemaker of the Year 2014) and Sam work as winemaker and commercial manager for Jim Barry Wines.
