The Woodlands Single Vineyard Pinot hails from a north-facing site in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, offering richness and structure with dark cherry, spice, and a savoury edge driven by its clay-rich soils and meticulous vineyard management.

The Lowestoft homestead is one of Tasmania’s oldest, built between 1839 and 1850.

Led by award-winning winemakers, the team draws on over a century of Tasmanian winemaking heritage to produce wines with purity, balance, and regional character.

Tasting Notes

The Fogarty family first landed in Tasmania from Ireland in the mid-1800s, and have recently returned to their roots with their exciting project Lowestoft. Purchased in 1830 by Thomas Lowes, he was one of the very first people to plant vines in the region near Hobart. They create pristine, luxury Tasmanian wines that provide joyous drinking experiences.

An expressive and refined Pinot Noir, the Woodlands 2021 opens with an aromatic mix of black cherry, redcurrant and wild strawberry, woven through with hints of clove, forest floor and dried herbs. The palate is silky and layered, revealing dark berry fruit, savoury spice and fine tannins that linger with graceful persistence.

Critic Scores

Pinot Noir sourced from the Woodlands vineyard in the Coal River Valley. Bright cherry fruit studded with spice, pomegranate, pressed flowers, cranberry, mountain herbs and subtle undergrowth at the core. There is a pleasing depth to the dark cherry and wild strawberry fruits with fine powdery tannins, a bright mineral-laden line and a composed, savoury swish of the tail on the exit.

Vineyard Cultivation

Lowestoft is a premium Tasmanian estate owned by the Fogarty Wine Group, based at the historic Lowestoft homestead at Berriedale near Hobart, one of Tasmania's oldest houses and among the first sites planted to vines in the district. The Woodlands Single Vineyard Pinot is drawn from a north-facing site in the Coal River Valley, a warmer, drier sub-region east of Hobart, where clay-rich soils over a dolerite base and generous sun exposure build richness and structure. Meticulous vineyard management keeps yields low and ripening even. The 2021 Tasmanian vintage was widely regarded as excellent, with a warm, dry summer and cool nights producing deeply flavoured, well-balanced fruit with dark cherry depth and a savoury edge.

Vinification

The Coal River Valley fruit was hand-harvested and sorted, then mostly destemmed with a portion of whole bunches retained to add spice, floral lift and tannin structure. After a cold soak, the must was wild-fermented in small open vessels with gentle hand plunging to draw fine, powdery tannin and preserve the site's brightness. Pressed to French oak barriques, a proportion new, the wine completed malolactic fermentation and matured on fine lees to build texture and depth. Bottled with minimal handling, it shows bright cherry and wild strawberry studded with spice, pomegranate, pressed flowers and mountain herbs, with fine powdery tannins, a mineral line and a composed, savoury finish.
