Tasting Notes

Luke Lambert is a star of the Yarra Valley. Tiny production and a cult following ensures that his wines sell out quickly after release every year.

The Luke Lambert Syrah is always made with a deft touch.

Luke's choice of vineyard in the South-West of the Yarra Valley (some of the coolest terrain in the region) offers him the opportunity to make a wine of unique elegance and finesse.

The continued success of this wine has cemented Luke as one of the true winemaking craftsman of his generation. Luke uses whole bunches to beautiful effect, elevating Yarra Valley Syrah to a spicy, ethereal wine with a quiet confidence.

Once again, this release is beautifully balanced, refined and pure-fruited - all the hallmarks of Luke's signature Syrah style.

Critic Scores

An unirrigated patch of vines, still establishing themselves. A medium-bodied wine of ethereal scents and a savory structural latticework that brings the drinker back to chew on the tannins. Great tannins, here. Violets, blueberries, iodine, tapenade and saucisson, with a hint of dill, clove and something loamy and ferrous to the mouthfeel, imparting warmth and a strong sense of place. There is something evocative about this, even if new to the style. It all feels intuitive. It all feels right. Drink or hold.

The stunning 2022 Syrah is super-stylish, with a modern, fresh edge. It delivers up a powerful yet refined core of mulberry and blackberry, with toasted spices and stalky dried herbs well matched to a backbone of fine French oak. Fantastic energy follows, the whole-bunchy herbs providing a youthful, compact shape to meaty, spicy and violet flavors, all supported by sturdy tannins. There's a confidence and composure here that will serve this wine well for at least a decade. Drink 2027-2038.

Vineyard Cultivation

Luke Lambert is a small, cult Yarra Valley producer whose tiny production sells out quickly each release. The Syrah is drawn from an unirrigated vineyard in the south-west of the Yarra Valley, some of the coolest terrain in the region, where the young vines are still establishing themselves. The cool site and dry-grown, low-vigour vines give the ethereal, savoury, medium-bodied style that defines the wine, with a strong sense of place. The 2022 Yarra Valley season was cool and favoured freshness and finesse, producing fruit of fine natural structure that suited Lambert's restrained, whole-bunch-driven approach.

Vinification

The wine is made with a deliberately light touch and minimal intervention. Around 60% whole bunches were included and the fruit fermented on wild, indigenous yeasts, with malolactic fermentation also proceeding naturally. Extended time on skins builds the fine, chewy tannin latticework that critics single out. The wine was then matured in large-format French oak foudre, the neutral, large vessels adding structure and slow micro-oxygenation without imparting oak flavour, keeping the violet, blueberry and savoury, iodine-like characters pure. The result is a spicy, aromatic and finely structured Syrah built for medium-term cellaring.
