Critic Scores

Always the earliest-ripening portion of the Chapoutier holdings on the Hermitage hill, the 2017 Ermitage le Méal is a complete standout. Crème de framboise notes remain fresh and lively throughout, joined by hints of blueberry, baking spices and vanilla, while the tannins are silky, the mouthfeel generous and the overall impression is one of great seductiveness and elegance.

This is part of a welcome move away from oak influence in Chapoutier's Hermitage range: they first moved to using only Burgundian barrels, then gradually decreased the amount of new oak. This 2017 will spend 18 months in barriques and demi-muids, just 25% new. It's distinctly blackberry in aroma, very ripe and fresh with a touch of blackberry coulis and some spicy reduction. It's very concentrated and full-bodied yet not massive, but the effect is nonetheless hugely powerful - it's very tannic and highly saline with a very long finish of serrated, mineral tannins. This will be very long lived.

The 2017 Ermitage Le Méal was backward and closed, which is rare for this wine, yet has classy and complex notes of black raspberries, toasted spices, graphite, game, and flowery incense-like nuances. Full-bodied, silky, and flawlessly balanced...

A showy expression with very fresh and exotic aromas of red and white cherries, peaches, oranges and plums, as well as dark chocolate and a swathe of spices. The palate is so appealing, offering really fleshy, succulent and sweet, ripe dark plums and chocolate and very glossy, gossamer tannins. So polished. Very long.

Dark purple. Deeply pitched, smoke- and mineral-tinged cassis, cherry liqueur, incense and violet aromas show outstanding clarity and a touch of candied flowers. Sweet and broad in the mouth, offering deeply concentrated black/blue fruit preserve, floral pastille and licorice flavors, along with suggestions of black cardamom and smoky bacon. The extremely long, chewy finish features bright mineral cut, intense blue fruit character and firm, youthfully tannic grip.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Le Meal represents a distinct parcel within Hermitage's classified terroir, characterised by complex micaceous and granitic soils with clay elements that provide structure and mineralisation to the Syrah. This mid-slope section receives excellent exposure and moderate water retention. The 2017 vintage saw warm ripening conditions in the Rhône, with Chapoutier managing canopy carefully to balance fruit concentration with acidity. Syrah from Le Meal typically achieves lower alcohol than the steepest L'Ermite exposures while maintaining concentration, reflecting the site's well-balanced microclimate and soil composition.

Vinification

The 2017 Le Meal fruit was harvested at optimum ripeness and fermented in open vats with natural yeasts, undergoing thorough skin contact to extract colour, tannin, and complexity. Malolactic conversion proceeded in temperature-controlled conditions before élevage in French oak—a combination of new and older barrels to balance oak integration with fruit expression. The wine received extended time in wood, typical of Chapoutier's approach to Hermitage. This traditional vinification emphasises structure and ageing potential aligned with the wine's complexity.
