Tasting Notes

Main Ridge Half Acre Pinot Noir 2013 is an exquisite representation of premium Australian pinot noir, originating from the highly regarded Main Ridge district on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. Crafted from a rare half acre of vines, this wine embodies the distinctive terroir of one of the region’s smallest yet most celebrated pockets known for producing exceptional pinot noir wines.

This 2013 vintage benefits from the Mornington Peninsula’s balanced growing conditions, which allowed slow and even grape ripening, resulting in a wine with remarkable depth, intensity, and nuanced complexity. The Half Acre site’s unique microclimate and soil composition impart delicate aromatics of cherry and raspberry, intertwined with subtle earthy undertones that add sophistication to the bouquet.

On the palate, the wine reveals silky tannins and vibrant acidity, offering a structured yet elegant mouthfeel. These characteristics contribute to both its immediate appeal and impressive aging potential, making it a coveted selection for wine enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Critically acclaimed, this vintage earned an outstanding 96 points from Huon Hooke, highlighting the meticulous craftsmanship and superior quality of this release. Sourced from a phenomenal private cellar, it showcases the purity, finesse, and enduring complexity synonymous with the finest pinot noirs from the Mornington Peninsula.

Experience a refined expression of Australian terroir with the Main Ridge Half Acre Pinot Noir 2013, a rare gem that captures the essence of its region and vintage in every elegant sip.

Critic Scores

Deep red/purple colour; saturated for a pinot. It's subtly fragrant, smelling of red and dark fruits, violets and spices, with some dried herbs also. In the mouth, it's concentrated and powerful, deep and dense, with power and presence. The acidity is lively and there is some alcohol heat high on the back palate. A powerhouse of a pinot. If anything it's a touch too butch, with tannins and alcohol sticking out at angles, but the wine has great potential.

Destemmed, wild-fermented, 18 days on skins, 17 months maturation in French oak (50% new). Deeper colour than The Acre; signals its intentions with the first whiff of the black cherry and plum bouquet, building on that with the powerful, yet fluid, palate where the fruit flavours run amok, satsuma plum to the fore, black cherries also featuring.

An assertive, strong, warmer year pinot of substance and strength. Deeply and powerfully ripened, with a dark, wild and heady bouquet layered with concentrated aromas of red, blue and black fruits, cedary and faintly chocolatey oak, cloves and cinnamon, itÕs lifted with a heady, floral perfume. ItÕs sumptuous and forward, delivering a smooth, plush presence of very ripe, confiture-like fruit underpinned by firmish but pliant tannins, finishing with impression and impact. Likely to become very wild and gamey with time.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Main Ridge Estate was founded in 1975 by Nat and Rosalie White, who pioneered fine Pinot Noir on the Mornington Peninsula from a former orchard block at Red Hill in the cool highlands of Main Ridge. The Half Acre is a minute, closely planted parcel that has become one of the Peninsula's most acclaimed single-vineyard Pinot sites. Grown on red volcanic and clay-loam soils at altitude, in a maritime climate of cool nights and steady rainfall, the block is farmed for very low yields and full physiological ripeness. The 2013 Mornington Peninsula vintage was a warmer, riper season, producing a concentrated, powerful style of Pinot Noir with saturated colour, depth and considerable presence.

Vinification

The Half Acre fruit was hand-harvested at low yield, sorted and destemmed, then wild-fermented in small open vessels with roughly eighteen days on skins, worked by gentle hand plunging to build depth without coarseness. The wine was pressed to French oak barriques, about half new, where it completed malolactic fermentation and matured for around seventeen months on fine lees to knit the powerful fruit and oak together. Careful, low-intervention handling preserved varietal clarity. The result is a deep, saturated, concentrated Pinot with black cherry, satsuma plum, violets and spice, cedary and faintly chocolatey oak, and firm but pliant tannins - a warmer-year powerhouse built for the long haul.
