Vineyard Cultivation

Main Ridge Estate was founded at Red Hill in 1975 by Nat and Rosalie White, the first commercial winery on the Mornington Peninsula. The Acre is one of two minute estate blocks and gives a lighter, more floral style than the Half Acre. It is planted on red basalt-derived Ferrosol soils at around 250 metres in a cool maritime climate, with close-planted, hand-tended vines cropped at very low yields. The 2014 season on the Peninsula was warm and even, with a dry, settled autumn that carried the fruit to full flavour ripeness while preserving the fresh acidity central to the estate's style.

Vinification

In keeping with the estate's long-standing method, the fruit was hand-picked and fermented with wild yeasts, given an extended time on skins before pressing to French oak, where the wine matured for well over a year before an unfined, unfiltered bottling. Whole bunches are typically avoided for The Acre, keeping the emphasis on bright, primary red fruit and the block's delicacy. Handling throughout is gentle and low-intervention, favouring purity and fragrance over weight.
