Tasting Notes

Crafted by Mas Doix, a distinguished winery nestled in the rugged terrain of Priorat, Catalonia, Spain, this wine is a testament to the region's unique terroir and the winery's commitment to quality.

A blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Carignan, 10% Syrah. Sourced from bush vines of 25 to 30 years old. After winemaking, the wine is aged for 14 months in new and second year French oak barrels of superfine grain.

Intense cherry color precedes a captivating aroma that is both spicy and mineral, with hints of ripe red fruit adding to its allure. On the palate, it exhibits elegance and fullness, accompanied by remarkable persistence and very good acidity. This wine embodies sophistication and finesse.

Critic Scores

Color: deep cherry
Aroma: ripe fruit, dried herbs, creamy oak, mineral,
fi ne reductive notes
Flavour: powerful, ripe fruit, spicy, round tannins

The 2021 Salanques, a blend of 70% Garnacha, 20% Cariñena and 10% Syrah, has the subtleness, elegance and freshness of the cooler year. There's good ripeness and great balance, red and black fruit, some spices and flowers, and it's elegant and aromatic. It has a medium to full-bodied palate with good ripeness, the customary 14.5% alcohol and a low pH and high acidity that show in the vibrant palate. It finishes long, clean and very tasty. 18,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2023.

Crisp and red fruited, light notes of raspberry as well as cranberry, bright fennel and rosemary, light touch of jasmine, and oolong tea. Fresh and zippy on the palate, fruit present but the acidity gets in the way a touch and threatens to overwhelm the wine..

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Mas Doix's Salanques vineyard sits in the heart of Priorat's slate terraces, where old Grenache vines benefit from the region's rocky, mineral-rich soils and the Atlantic-influenced climate that tempers summer heat. The estate practises sustainable viticulture, using natural cover crops and minimal intervention in the vineyard to preserve soil integrity and plant health. The 2021 vintage saw moderate temperatures with adequate spring rain and a warm, dry summer — ideal conditions for balanced phenolic ripeness without excessive alcohol development. Harvest took place in early October, with careful fruit selection ensuring only optimal berry maturity entered the winery.

Vinification

Salanques undergoes careful fermentation in temperature-controlled open vats, where indigenous yeasts drive a slow, extended fermentation lasting three to four weeks. The winery employs a combination of foot-treading and pump-over to achieve gentle extraction and phenolic maturity. Following fermentation, the wine rests in a mix of French oak (roughly 30%) and steel to develop complexity while retaining freshness. Malolactic conversion occurs naturally over several months, and the wine spends 18 months in this medium before final assembly and bottling with minimal fining or filtration.
