Critic Scores

A captivating bouquet, precise and new, fresh and varietal, complex and detailed, subtle and intriguing. Aromas and flavours of fresh red cherry flesh and soil-smoke of stony clay, then lees and layers of wood spice and roses. As the wine opens out on the palate so too do the flavours of fruit and mineral, a sense of site and reflection of vintage. Excellent structure - tannins are polished, fine and in abundance, acidity carries flavours and tension. A lovely wine, very youthful and will develop slowly if you decide to cellar.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Maude Wines was established by Dan and Dr Sarah-Kate Dineen around their Maungawera Valley vineyard near Wanaka in Central Otago. The estate Pinot Noir blends home-vineyard fruit with parcels from trusted growers across Central Otago's stony sub-regions, presenting a wine of place at district level. The vines are grown on free-draining schist and glacial soils in a dry, continental climate where large diurnal swings retain natural acidity and aromatic definition. The 2024 vintage delivered a fresh, precise expression, with the growing season allowing gradual, even ripening and producing fruit of clarity, red-cherry vibrancy and cool-climate tension.

Vinification

Fruit was hand-picked and sorted, then fermented as separate sub-regional parcels, predominantly destemmed with a measured whole-bunch component for spice and structure. Wild and inoculated ferments proceeded in open vessels with gentle hand plunging over a controlled maceration before pressing to barrel. Malolactic fermentation ran through in French oak and the wine was matured for around ten to eleven months, a modest portion in new barrels, to frame rather than dominate the fruit. Parcels were blended, minimally fined and bottled under screwcap, yielding polished, abundant tannins and a fresh, site-reflective palate.
