Tasting Notes

The project of Maynard James Keenan, frontman of the band Tool, this sangiovese is from the Buhl Memorial Vineyard in Willcox County in Southern Arizona, which is situated 4300 ft above sea level. It is aged in neutral barrels, maintaining that fruit purity and freshness. The nose gives aromas of dark cherry and blackberry, spice and an earthiness in the form of wild mushrooms and forest floor.

Vineyard Cultivation

Merkin's 'Shinola' Sangiovese is a non-vintage release from Arizona vineyard holdings. Sangiovese, traditionally associated with Italy, has found a foothold in warm, high-altitude American regions where diurnal temperature variation supports its characteristic bright acidity and cherry-driven fruit. Arizona's desert climate provides intense sunlight and cooler nights, conditions that suit Sangiovese's ripening profile. The NV format allows the producer to blend multiple vintages for consistency. Vineyard management emphasises sustainable practices and careful harvest timing to balance ripeness with acidity retention.

Vinification

Sangiovese grapes were fermented in temperature-controlled tanks, with maceration managed to extract colour and moderate tannins appropriate to the variety's food-friendly style. After fermentation, the wine received aging in neutral oak or stainless steel, allowing Sangiovese's bright acidity and cherry fruit to remain the primary focus. The non-vintage release blends component wines from multiple vintages, offering a consistent house style. Minimal oak influence is typical for Sangiovese in warm regions.

About this Wine

Caduceus Cellars

Maynard James Keenan is a Pioneer in Arizona Winemaking and created the Caduceus Label for his Arizona Vineyard, Merkin Vineyards. One day, inbetween recording and touring for his award winning bands Tool, A Perfect Circle & Puscifer, he looked out from his patio and realised that the climate, soil and terrain around his home in Northern Arizona was similar to that of some of the great wine regions of the world.

Caduceus Cellars & Merkin Vineyards are a small, independent family run winery with very limited production.
