Tasting Notes

The winery is the project of Maynard James Keenan, the front man of the band Tool. Focused on site and varieties this blend is working wonders once again. Chalky, earthy, fruity with notes of cedar apricot, cloves and chocolate. The tannins are soft and velvety, with plenty of acidity for balance and great aging potential.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Merkin Vineyards, established in the high-altitude desert regions of Arizona, sources Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes adapted to the region's demanding climate. The vineyard benefits from dramatic diurnal temperature variations characteristic of Arizona's semi-arid terroir, where daytime heat is moderated by cool evening conditions. These conditions allow for extended ripening periods that concentrate fruit flavours whilst preserving natural acidity. The house follows sustainable viticulture practices suited to water conservation in the desert environment, with vintage conditions varying from year to year based on seasonal rainfall patterns typical of the American Southwest. NEEDS VERIFICATION: Specific vineyard locations and organic/sustainable certification details.

Vinification

The Tempranillo and Garnacha blend is harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve varietal character. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to extract colour and tannin structure whilst maintaining freshness. The wines undergo a moderate oak programme with a blend of French and American oak to balance structure with the fruit-forward profile characteristic of the blend. Malolactic fermentation occurs post-primary fermentation to soften acidity and add textural complexity. The final blend balances the structured tannins of Tempranillo with the softer, spice-driven character of Garnacha. NEEDS VERIFICATION: Specific fermentation duration, oak aging period, and percentage composition of the blend.

About this Wine

Caduceus Cellars

Maynard James Keenan is a Pioneer in Arizona Winemaking and created the Caduceus Label for his Arizona Vineyard, Merkin Vineyards. One day, inbetween recording and touring for his award winning bands Tool, A Perfect Circle & Puscifer, he looked out from his patio and realised that the climate, soil and terrain around his home in Northern Arizona was similar to that of some of the great wine regions of the world.

Caduceus Cellars & Merkin Vineyards are a small, independent family run winery with very limited production.
