This cool-to-moderate maritime region in the state's south-east is defined by its terra rossa soils - red clay-loam over limestone - which drain freely and suit even, unforced ripening. Sea-moderated temperatures and a long, gentle growing season help preserve the fresh acidity, red-fruit purity and aromatic lift prized in cool-climate Pinot Noir. Fruit was fermented in a straightforward, low-intervention manner, with no acidification in line with the Mezzo philosophy. Any oak maturation used only genuine barrels rather than staves or chips, keeping the emphasis on bright, unforced Pinot fruit and supple texture. The wine was made in a fresh, elegant style with fine, balanced tannins and a natural acid line, intended for early, pleasurable drinking. Handling was gentle throughout to preserve the pure red-fruit character and avoid over-extraction, delivering a well-made cool-climate Pinot that markedly over-delivers for its price.
