Michael Hall runs his small Barossa label under his own name, working with a network of growers to make site-specific wines in a restrained, European-influenced style. The 'Stonewell Road' Shiraz comes from Evan and Tina Gobell's vineyard in the Stonewell district of the Barossa Valley, planted at around 255 metres on red loam over clay laced with ironstone. The vineyard has a gentle westerly aspect and is pruned to low yields for early-ripening, concentrated fruit, with the ironstone subsoil lending the wine its firm, mineral spine. The 2023 vintage in the Barossa was a notably cool, later-ripening season across the region, producing wines of freshness, fine tannin and taut structure, and yielding a very small release of just 840 bottles.

In keeping with house practice, fruit was handpicked, with a portion retained as whole bunches and the balance destemmed, then wild-fermented in open fermenters to build aromatic lift and preserve a lean, precise palate shape. After pressing the wine was matured in French oak, with only a small proportion new so that the ironstone-driven fruit and structure remain in the foreground. Handling is gentle throughout, prioritising fruit purity, seamless tannin and a long acid line over power. The result is a tightly wound, age-worthy Shiraz made in tiny quantities.
