Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Roaring Meg is the second label of Mt Difficulty Wines, named after a fast-flowing tributary of the Kawarau River in Central Otago. Fruit for the Pinot Gris is sourced from vineyards across the Cromwell Basin - encompassing sub-districts such as Bannockburn, Lowburn and Pisa - where free-draining glacial and schist-derived soils sit under a semi-continental climate of hot, dry days and cold nights. This large diurnal range preserves natural acidity while allowing the very ripe, tropical fruit character that defines the wine. The 2025 fruit was harvested at full flavour ripeness to preserve the wine's ripe, aromatic character and fresh acid line.

Vinification

Grapes were harvested and gently whole-bunch or crushed-and-pressed to juice, which was cool-fermented in stainless steel to protect the variety's aromatics. The wine is finished in an off-dry style, with a touch of retained natural sugar balanced by fine acidity and a ripe, phenolic-textured finish. Minimal lees contact and no oak keep the focus on succulent stone-fruit and tropical fruit purity; the wine is designed for early drinking, optimal from release to about four years.
